Matches played Saturday 9th February 2008 At last - it's back to normal. At last, a week, and a weekend of dry weather, which enabled all of the scheduled Amateur League fixtures to take place, and also importantly, several ERCFA Cup ties which can be disruptive if they need to be held over.
Pinefleet Wolfreton Reserves felt that the lack of recent games affected their performance against Intrasource Mainbrace, on a well grassed, but uneven Kenilworth Avenue pitch, and, despite applying most of the early pressure, were guilty of giving the ball away too often as they tried to play their short passing game.
Intrasource were much more direct in their approach and were caused concern for the Pinefleet rearguard, where Gary Davis in goal, was kept on his toes dealing with through balls.
Whilst Pinefleet continued to enjoy plenty of possession, Mainbrace keeper Matt Midwood was rarely in action.
Mainbrace took the lead when yet another long ball from the back caused problems and as the ball was half cleared to the edge of the area it was lashed goalward by Sean Wright who gave Davis no chance.
Stung by this set back, Pinefleet piled forward and within a couple of minutes had a glorious chance to level the score when Chris Meyerhoff was pushed over in the box, but the spot kick was missed and it looked as though the home side would lead into the break.
However, in the final minute of the half, Paul French scored his first goal for Pinefleet with a shot from twenty-five yards which keeper Midwood just failed to push round the post.
Pinefleet nearly took the lead in the first ten seconds of the second half when Graham Waudby weaved his way past three defenders but shot wide, and the game continued in the same entertaining vein as in the first half before Pinefleet finally got their noses in front when Stuart Cook scored despite the attention of two defenders on the goal-line after the home keeper was winded making a save on the edge of the area, the deflected ball looping nicely into his path.
This reverse took the sting out of Mainbrace, and a quick fire double from leading scorer Waudby, who took advantage as Mainbrace pressed forward, gave the score line a slightly unfair look. Mainbrace play a quality of football which is not reflected in their league position, and kept going till the very end and could easily have pulled a couple of goals back but for some last ditch defending by Pinefleet.
The game concluded without one bad challenge being made throughout the ninety minutes, and both teams took part in a competitive and very entertaining game which was a credit to the Premier Division.
Both Truss 2 Frame and Bridges (Jar in Hand) needed to take some reward from their clash in order to improve their league standings, and the first half was entertaining fare, but Truss arrived at the break trailing, having conceded two goals.
Truss came out for the second half with all guns blazing, and dominated the action and drew level with goals from Simon Start and Jamie Marshall.
The half, however, had a sting in the tail, as, in the final minutes David Dean, who had been a revelation in the Truss goal, was wrong-footed by a shot that came off a post and provided Bridges with the match winning score.
A very fast start in Division 1 by Hall Road Rangers 3rd put Cottingham Hotspur on the defensive, and although their rearguard was very well marshalled by veteran Mark Wiles he could not prevent Hall Road taking the lead when a through ball split the defence resulting in keeper John Hawkes bringing down the Hall Road winger and the resultant penalty was duly despatched.
Cottingham were caught out by a second through ball, which Hall Road capitalised on, and at the break Cottingham faced an uphill struggle.
The second half saw Cottingham make a very good start, and a class finish by Trevor Edwards brought Cottingham right back into contention and Cottingham continued to press their opponents and were rewarded with a deserved equaliser from Mike Hawkes.
The fixture list has been unkind to a Paull Wanderers side looking to climb away from the foot of the league table, having pitched them successively against league leaders AFC West Hull followed by their close title rivals Kingburn Athletic 2nd.
Paull fielded two new signings in the hope of presenting a stronger defence, but were also having to face a period of adjustment as the previously ever present James Sexton, was beginning a four-match ban. The Kingburn side was severely stretched as no fewer than eight players were unavailable for this game.
From the first whistle, Paull took the game to Kingburn but spurned early chances, particularly one glorious chance which went begging on 12 minutes when a through ball carved open the Kingburn defence, but Dave Williams, left one-on one with keeper Nathan Robinson, beat the keeper but placed the ball two feet wide of the goal!
Paull corrected the situation after 16 minutes when the ball was played to Lee Spicer on the right wing, and he sent over a pin-point cross to Liam Frazer at the back post and he netted with ease.
Kingburn began to put pressure on Paull as the interval approached, and equalised with a slightly fortuitous goal from Lee Roundill with a cross cum shot sailed into the net after keeper Mike Lowde committed himself to the anticipated crossed ball.
In the second half, Kingburn began to look the better team, but without putting any real pressure on the Paull goal, until the 68th minute when the ball was crossed to the left wing and Phil Rokahr used a Paull defender as a shield and hit the ball just inside the right hand post.
Paull had to rack up the pressure on Kingburn to try to achieve some reward from the game in the last 15 minutes, but chance after chance went astray and Kingburn hung on for the win.
SC Electrical and Hull Athletic played an open game with both sides going close in the early stages, and though Electrical were first on the scoresheet with a 40 yard effort from Paul Poucher, the score had been levelled by the break through a response from Danny Turner.
The game looked evenly poised on the resumption, but SC Electrical gradually took control and goals at regular intervals from Andy Dook, Chris Hetherington, Jon Riley, a well timed Paul Featherstone volley, and an own goal resulted in a very comfortable win.
Hull Grass Roots 2nd were relieved to be back in action for the first time in just short of a month, and set the early pace against The Courts FC but chances which fell to Mark Marr and Adam Petty were squandered, though Petty quickly made amends, setting the ball rolling, scoring from a quality pass supplied by Liam Parker.
Grass Roots midfield dynamo Danny Sanderson added a second goal, his first of the season, finishing off a quality cross from Andy Exelby who displayed energy, pace and ball control during his truncated stint in the action while he seeks to regain full match fitness.
A generally solid Roots defence suffered a couple of lapses in concentration and the ever-improving Courts team capitalised with two goals from Jamie Lamplough.
Grass Roots eased into a match winning position with Chris Snell an unsung hero in the heart of a three-man defence, but the side has a tendency to lack consistency and to get on each other’s backs when tiredness creeps into their play although on this occasion a goal from James Moss produced a timely calming effect.
Further goals from Marr, Parker and regular marksman Shiro Watson contributed to a comfortable win from an overall solid performance, which, if produced weekly, would catapult the side up the Division 2 league table.
The clash between Pinefleet Wolfreton Juniors and Cottingham Hotspur 2nd was an vital top of the table clash and produced an extremely good game of football which Pinefleet just shaded in the first half, going in one goal to the good.
The second half began well enough for Cottingham, with Mat Warcup levelling the scores, but Pinefleet recovered to take the lead before having their keeper Brian Kidd sent off, to be replaced by defender Shane Miller.
This situation should have worked against Pinefleet Juniors, but instead, Cottingham began gifting goals, to the extent of a flattering 5-1 margin to Pinefleet. Cottingham can’t wait for the return fixture where they hope to restore the balance and regain their credibility!
