Spot kick advice?? Call Swiss!!
The third round of the League Junior Cup provided entertaining fare and goals galore, and in the case of Hessle Sporting ‘C’, a welcome return to winning ways.

The tie on Pickering Park between SC Electrical and Swiss Cottage was a great advert for amateur football in Hull with both teams playing good football and in a great spirit.

Swiss Cottage took an immediate advantage, with Richard Sullivan scoring in the first minute with a delightful volley, and this set the tone for the action which switched from end to end, culminating in SC Electrical levelling the scores on the half hour with a well-taken penalty.

With just five minutes of the first half remaining, a great move down the right wing was converted to give Electrical the lead at the break, meaning that Swiss Cottage had to continue their enterprising go-forward to search for an equaliser.

The scores were levelled on the hour when Jamie Tune hit a fine shot past the diving James Hart in the Electrical goal.

With just eight minutes remaining on the clock, extra time was looming but Electrical had other ideas, and regained the lead with a well-taken shot into the top corner. This setback could have spelled curtains for Swiss, but the visitors refused to give up and with just three minutes left, Paul Allen ran past three defenders and placed the ball in the bottom corner of the net to force an extra 30 minutes to be played.

In extra time both sides had chances to take the lead but with the respective keepers pulling off some great saves the game ended all square and it was down to who could hold their nerve in a penalty shoot out.

This is not the first time in this season’s cup campaign that Swiss have been involved in a penalty decider, and it could be considered to be their forte as they progressed last time due to their unerring accuracy, and the omens were again good for them, when SC Electrical missed their first penalty after Ben Bassett had opened Swiss’s account.

A second conversion for Swiss by Darren Hunter really turned up the pressure on Electrical, but the next two kicks on each side were successful.

Under continually increasing pressure, and trailing by a 4-2 margin, the next SC spot kicker was horrified to see his goal scoring attempt well saved by keeper John Scott and the ecstatic Second Division side had overcome another First Division cup scalp and a place in the semi-finals……thanks to a continuing perfect penalty taking record!!

Hull Athletic’s youngsters gave Kingburn Athletic 2nds an almighty scare in their cup clash, taking a two-goal lead on two occasions, and holding a 4-2 advantage with only five minutes remaining.

A more experienced side would have run the game down, but as Kingburn increased the tempo to save the game, Hull Athletic were unable to withstand the late onslaught and the scores had been levelled at 4-4, when Lee Roundill, with virtually the last play of the game bundled the ball from the grasp of veteran keeper Charlie Duncan and over the line for the decisive score.

For a good part of the season, Tenyas seemed to turn on winning performances only in the League Cup, but this sequence came to an end against Hessle Sporting ‘C’ who are not performing anywhere near as successfully as in the early part of the season, but did enough on this occasion to ease into the semis with a 3-1 win.

A late fixture change brought the Premier Division head to head between Pinefleet Wolfreton Reserves and Inter Charter forward one week, and a tight defensive game was required by Inter Charter after conceding six goals in their last two fixtures, and that was how the game progressed, with Inter not needing to be too adventurous after a cautious start, but a start which brought an goal on ten minutes when Pinefleet failed to clear, and keeper Gary Davies saw the return shot late.

The next twenty minutes saw Charter doing little more than probe forward, and not bothering the Pinefleet rearguard, and slowly Pinefleet came more and more into the game, but similarly without putting Charter keeper Mike Draper under threat.

The second half saw defences remain on top though Pinefleet came close on two occasions mid way through the half when Stuart Cook had an effort cleared off the line and Graham Waudby went close.

The second and vital goal came fifteen minutes from the end in Charter’s favour when Pinefleet failed to mark from a free kick and a free header put Inter Charter in total control.

A third goal from Inter in the last minute gave the score line a somewhat lop-sided slant but overall Charter deserved their victory which was the third time this season they had defeated Pinefleet. Only Crown now have a realistic chance of overhauling Inter Charter who are now unbeaten in 15 league and cup games, though Crown’s own ambitions were dented when they played out a 2-2 draw with Eddie Beedle.

Paull Wanderers fixtures in Division 1 got no easier when again pitted against title chasing opponents, Blackburn Leisure, and on this occasion were handicapped by the absence of in-form keeper Mike Lowde.

Paull looked good form in the opening 10 minutes putting Blackburn on the back foot, but after weathering this opening burst, Blackburn scored the important first goal with a poor shot - the uneven pitch being to blame for the ball bobbling past embarrassed stand-in keeper Shaun Newton.

Paull needed to reply quickly and should have scored after creating two good chances, but instead Blackburn countered and on 21 minutes extended their lead.

Blackburn added a third goal five minutes later, leaving a big ask for Paull to get back into the game but on 38 minutes Paull gave themselves a lifeline when Karl Smith struck a powerful free kick which keeper Danny Parkinson got nowhere near.

At the start of the second half, Paull knew they needed to score the next goal and came out all guns blazing, winning corner after corner, but it was Blackburn who, on 51 minutes, scored again following a good counter attack, having caught Paull stretched in defence, and Paull were incredulous that they were trailing so badly given the balance of play.

Paull camped back in the Blackburn half of the pitch as the game resumed and on 55 minutes were rewarded with an overdue goal from Terry Thompson.

Blackburn finally started to perform like a top three team and concluded their scoring – but still with close on 30 minutes still remaining - when keeper Newton was lobbed when caught off his line. Paull still refused to capitulate and two strikings of the woodwork and three missed chances by the normally reliable Thompson, left Paull ruing a ‘nearly’ day.

Pinefleet Wolfreton Juniors entertained a vastly improved Greatfield OB in Division 2 at Hull University – and the off-form Juniors just managed to save the game with a late equaliser.

Pinefleet were intending to keep the pressure on league leaders AFC Preston and started well, when taking the lead through veteran Andy Clark after 15 minutes but in a ten minute spell close to half time, Greatfield scored twice, the second an exquisite length of the field move and headed finish, which exposed the centre half pairing of Mike Kidd and Richard Higgins. Pinefleet were missing a number of key players and appeared disjointed and their usual fast passing game was not evident and frustration was beginning to show.

Pinefleet's play did improve in the second half but Greatfield looked continually dangerous and appeared to be about to increase their lead but the attack faltered and Pinefleet broke quickly and for once passes found the players, which resulted in Chris Bucknell levelling the scores.

The game became a more even affair with the Pinefleet players growing in confidence and putting pressure on the Greatfield defence but in one attack Pinefleet missed a couple of shots and had a claim for a penalty refused, and away came Greatfield and the long ball beat the defence and Greatfield were again in the lead with just fifteen minutes left.

More urgency came into Pinefleet's play but attack after attack failed to produce any reward - amid scares at the other end - but on 85 minutes Pinefleet swept down the left side, the ball moved to the right, and then back into the middle for Jimmy Catchpole to apply the deftest of touches to guide the ball home and tie the scores at 3-3.

This score remained unchanged to the final whistle, which, on reflection, was a fair result, but not the result Pinefleet wanted!!

The first half of Hull Grass Roots 2nd game with Cottingham Hotspur 2nd was a very steady affair with very few chances created by either side, and a goal-less interval score was therefore predictable.

The second half, however, was more productive with Hotspur taking the lead 10 minutes after the resumption, closely followed by a second from Steve Gardham.

Grass Roots made the game interesting by replying straight away, but a brace of goals late in the game from Leon Drury settled the game in Cottingham’s favour.

A poor first half performance by AFC West Hull 2nd allowed AFC Piper to look the far better team and 3-0 advantage at half time reflected that, although a fine strike by West’s Danny Matchan could have got his team going but his effort unfortunately grazed the wrong side of the post.

The introduction of two substitutes, one just before, and one at half time, seemed to inject the required urgency into West Hull and a far more open game was evident in the second half with West Hull getting a goal back from Jamie Taylor’s fine strike from thirty yards, but the restart saw Piper respond with neat football and they moved up field to score again.

A second goal for West Hull from Dean Ellis with ten minutes remaining set up a mad finale of end-to-end football, with both teams going close in addition to adding a further goal each, but Piper held out to take the points.
