West Hull get one hand on League trophy after Wakelin hat-trick.
A drizzly day in Brough failed to dampen the spirit of AFC West Hull who knew that securing a positive result against Division 1 title rivals Blackburn Leisure would go a long way to ensuring that they would clinch the divisional silverware, and, initially, strong defence was therefore the order of the day

The experience of veteran John Thompson ensured that West Hull’s defence was well marshalled, and Blackburn were kept at bay with two banks of four players being deployed behind the ball, allowing Blackburn all the attacking play, but repeatedly their moves were broken up before gaining real momentum..

their moves were broken up before gaining real momentum.. On the day Blackburn needed the ability of top keeper Danny Parkinson, but he was missing from their line-up as he was nursing broken fingers, and defender Wes Lambert stood-in and did his best, but, playing out of position, was unable to instil the usual level of confidence into the defence, leaving those immediately in front of him decidedly nervy.

West Hull who took an early lead when Scott Wakelin scrambled the ball over the line past keeper Lambert, but still Blackburn looked confident as they came forward, seeking the equaliser.

Pressure on the West Hull defence resulted in consecutive corners, and after going close with the first attempt, leading marksman Barry Loughlin made no mistake, soaring highest to despatch a clinical header into the net.

It is often said that a team is most vulnerable having scored a goal, and this proved to be the case as an immediate response was made by West Hull who won a free kick which was swung into the Blackburn area, to the feet of Wakelin who was doubtless surprised to find himself with time and space, and his shot on goal sweetly nestled the ball in the back of the net.

The half time team talk to the Blackburn side centred around their territorial advantage, and inability to finish, and the intention to remedy this initially spurred the side to even greater effort on the resumption.

A relatively rare forage into the Blackburn half saw West Hull increase their lead with a disputed goal, Blackburn claiming that the ball had been handled by Wayne Stabeler in bringing it under control, but considered by the referee to having struck the player high on the shoulder, and he sidestepped the marking defender before striking the ball just inside the post from the edge of the area.

Blackburn seemed to lose their direction after this setback, though on occasion still put some nice moves together, but remained unable to apply a telling finish while a shot from Mike Neylon who was also allowed too much space, added a fourth goal for West Hull.

West Hull were gifted a further goal when interpassing between keeper Lambert and substitute Andy Dawson went horribly wrong, and Scott Wakelin was left with an embarrassing tap-in to round off his hat-trick.

A win for West Hull was undoubtedly deserved, but Blackburn will reflect on the manner and margin of defeat, and realise that they had ‘one of those days’ – at just the wrong time, and although they are an excellent side, they do need to either bolster their defence or, when the situation demands, play a less expansive game!!

SC Electrical have strung a series of winning scores together to move into a comfortable second place, but with the teams trailing them, Kingburn Athletic 2nd, South Holderness, and Cavalier Wanderers also all winning, the final placings are far from decided.

SC Electrical got off to a flying start against Hull Grass Roots with goals from Tom Mason and Paul Featherstone, but Grass Roots got back into the game and two goals from Jamie Simmonds levelled the scores at the break.

SC Electrical got their passing game into gear in the second half and took control, with further goals coming from John Riley (2), Mark Wordingham and Chris Herring.

Hull Grass Roots added a consolation goal that completed Jamie Simmonds hat-trick – but to score a hat-trick and still finish on the losing side was scant consolation for the player!!

Tom Mason and Lewis Poucher had good games in the centre of midfield for Electrical, while John Riley took the main plaudits for his excellent form on the left wing.

Paull Wanderers became the first team to complete their 22 fixture season against Kingburn 2nd who recovered from two poor results to hit better form to take into their fixture run-in and cup semi final date.

For much of the season, Paull have thanked keeper Mike Lowde for sterling displays between the posts, but on this occasion, on nine minutes, he mishandled a shot from Andy Devine, and Adam Cieskowski nipped in to score, and open Kingburn’s account.

Ten minutes later, Kingburn increased their lead when Mark Clark scored following a Nick Holmes free kick, when he got in round the back of the Paull defence and scored with a diving header.

A ball over the Paull defence in the 65th minute provided Mark Elliott with the opportunity to lob the ball over keeper Lowde for Kingburn’s third success.

There was an element of luck involved in Kingburn’s fourth goal after 80 minutes – with Andy Devine again involved - his shot hitting team mate Glen Houghton - who claimed the goal - on his back, and the ball was deflected past the keeper.

Kingburn rounded off the game with another success three minutes before the final whistle when Clarke scored his second following a corner swung over by John Smith.

Beset by injuries and work commitments, Premier Division Intrasource Mainbrace fielded an under strength side against a Truss 2 Frame side who were delighted to welcome keeper Mark Foster back, after recovering from a broken leg.

Mark had been chomping at the bit to resume playing and resumed like he had never been away, and Truss quickly took the lead when a cross from the left was headed home by Duane Grantley, and shortly afterwards a shot from Simon Start from 30 yards left Mainbrace’s stand-in keeper Neil Broadley no chance. The margin had increased to three goals by the break, with a second goal from Start

The second half saw a much more determined Mainbrace side take the field, and their efforts were soon rewarded with a penalty which was well put away by Anthony Fowler and minutes later a second goal looked on the cards until denied by a goal-line clearance.

Mainbrace continued to attack and had most of the possession in the second half but Truss, with some last ditch defending, and keeper Foster and man of the match Phil Wilson coming to the fore, kept the score unchanged at 3-1.

This game typified Mainbrace’s season of good quality football but insufficient goals to show for all their hard work.

Inter Charter extended their unbeaten league record and moved closer towards the Premier League title with a narrow win over Eddie Beedle FC.

A Miles Anderson header with twenty minutes remaining sealed Charter’s win in a close contest played in misty and damp conditions. Carl Pulford had put Charter one up early in the second half but Eddie Beedle had levelled through Carl Giblin following a defensive error.

Swiss Cottage gave a depleted AFC Piper team a lesson in football in Division 2 and registered their highest score of the season.

Ben Bassett, the Swiss striker scored a double hat-trick, and Shaun Scotthorne bagged a brace. The Piper team did not let the hefty score line deflate them, and they replied with three well-taken goals.
