Inter Charter have one hand on trophy, but it's not over, yet..
League fixtures are rapidly diminishing as the season approaches its conclusion, and although in the Amateur League Premier Division, Inter Charter look likely to take the championship honours, a challenge still remains mathematically possible after the latest fixtures of Crown FC and Kingburn Athletic – which both yielded maximum points. However, as Kingburn and Crown are scheduled to face each other in a midweek fixture, one or both, dependant on that match result, will drop out of the running.

Kingburn and Pinefleet Wolfreton Reserves came face to face again just two weeks after a titanic League Senior Cup semi final struggle, but on this occasion Pinefleet travelled to Hessle handicapped by missing first choice players, and in fact played the first 15 minutes with only 10 players.

Despite this disadvantage, Pinefleet started brightly and created a few chances as Kingburn took time to settle, but, ironically, it was only when Pinefleet were brought up to full strength that Kingburn were started to gain the upper hand.

Despite the swing in game play, Pinefleet took the lead when Carl Grantham played a cross from the left into the path of Matty Ellerington who coolly beat keeper Ben Hamilton.

As half time approached Pinefleet were more than holding their own, and were looking to increasingly capable of adding to their lead, until an horrendous error by keeper Gary Davis gifted Kingburn an equaliser as he spilled a harmless ball to the feet of Ricky Johnson who slid the ball into an empty net.

The second half opened with Kingburn pushing forward and looking dangerous whilst Pinefleet were finding it difficult to break down a resolute home defence.

As the half progressed Kingburn began to dominate the game and it came as no surprise when Bret Cooper headed the ball home following a right wing cross.

Pinefleet, with no substitutes available, were beginning to tire as Kingburn pressed forward and another defensive error allowed Johnson an easy finish.

Kingburn had the opportunity to rub salt into the wound when awarded a last minute penalty, but Johnson missed the chance to complete his hat-trick when his spot kick hit the post.

Crown kept their title challenge alive with two winning score-lines of 6-2, the first in midweek against, and at, AFC Preston and again on Saturday against Truss 2 Frame.

The game against Truss was, for a good half hour, very frustrating for Crown who launched repeated attacks, timing runs well to beat Truss’s intended off side trap, but could not hit the target, and then fell behind as Duane Grantley demonstrated the art of finishing!

It was inevitable that Crown would level matters, and once the breakthrough came, so the floodgates – though not too severely – opened, slowed down only by the respite of a disputed penalty which Truss leading marksman Mike Newdick converted easily.

Although his enthusiasm cannot be faulted, Mark Foster in the Truss goal, gave a nervy display, which was not up to his usual standard, and this had an effect on his team mates. It is hard to criticise his return to action after a broken leg, but recuperating until the new 2008/09 would seem to be a more sensible decision for him to have taken.

Inter Charter found their game against Hessle Sporting ‘B’ to be no easy task, and the small pitch and an awkward cross field wind kept the contest close, but a more convincing second half, aided by a double substitution at the break, resulted in a convincing 4-1 scoreline….and one hand on the League trophy.

Kingburn Athletic 2nd are looking to finish as high as possible in Division 1, but like their senior side, face a difficult task this week against equally high flying Cavalier Wanderers, where something has to give.

Kingburn slowly ground out a solid win over Hull Athletic, after a tight first half which saw Mike Elliott give them the lead, but within ten minutes Hull Athletic had equalised.

The start of the second half saw the scores remain unchanged, but a six minute spell changed the complexion of the game as Adam Cieslikowski, Mike Whitehead and Lee Roundill scored with two minute interval between goals putting Kingburn well in control.

Kingburn were not finished and Mark Clark added another goal after 75 minutes and Alan Campey rounded things off on 83 minutes.

Cavalier Wanderers produced another solid performance, emulating Kingburn’s scoreline against bottom placed Tenyas, who completed an unhappy campaign.

The Division 2 title is a two team contest between AFC Preston 2nd and Pinefleet Wolfreton Reserves, and an interesting fixture faced Preston who came up against a Greatfield OB side who have come on leaps and bounds this season, and who were completing their fixtures, and who a few weeks ago came within a whisker of defeating rivals main rivals, Pinefleet.

The potential banana skin, in a wind effected game, was avoided by Preston for whom top scorer Ricky McNee was again twice on the mark, and Karl Fitzpatrick’s supporting goal ensured a 3-1 win was recorded.

Swiss Cottage are making a late assault on third place, but made heavy weather of defeating Intrasource Mainbrace ‘B’, being shaken to the core as Adam Atkinson, Kyle Tuttle and Richard Blackburn recorded goals for Mainbrace.

Whether their impending cup final date was uppermost in Swiss’s mind is unclear – but that is not the sort of start cup opponents Blackburn Leisure will surrender, but Swiss did fight their way back into this game and goals from Richard Sullivan, Jamie Tune, Ben Bassett and Jac Longden snatched a win from the jaws of defeat.
