Matches played Saturday 3rd May 2008 Intrasource Mainbrace take champions all the way.. A pleasant evening – the lull before a deluge of rain which put paid to the League Senior Cup final which had been scheduled for the following night – enabled Intrasource Mainbrace to complete their Amateur League Premier Division fixtures in an upbeat fashion, against the League champions Inter Charter, who it could be said gave a subdued performance, knowing the league title was ‘in the bag’ but nonetheless wanted to preserve their unbeaten record.
Mainbrace lost the services of Shaun Hunter in the heart of their defence when he was forced stand-in in goal to deputise for the injured Matt Midwood, but the side overcame the team reshuffle to take part in a very entertaining game which saw them take advantage of the wind and pin Inter Charter back for most of the first half.
Mainbrace were justly rewarded when they were awarded a clear penalty for a
handling offence, and Anthony Fowler stepped up and smashed the ball into the roof of the net. Mainbrace continued to create chances, but Charter, with some good defending and goal keeping kept the margin between the teams to a single goal at half time.
The second half saw Inter Charter, who were fielding a full strength team, come out fighting to save their unbeaten reputation and were quickly in their stride with some good passing moves but solid defending kept them at bay.
Mainbrace still managed to create chances and were unlucky when, with 15 minutes left, a Rob Hemmingway shot hit the post and went out for a goal kick. Relieved to have escaped narrowly, Charter went straight up the other end and equalised when a shot bounced off the post but this time back into play and was only half cleared to Charter left back Neil Lyons, who smashed the ball home despite two defenders best efforts to block it.
With 15 minutes remaining, Inter Charter threw everything at Mainbrace and keeper Shaun Hunter had to dive full length to tip a vicious curling shot onto the post and then to punch clear from underneath his own crossbar as three forwards bore down on him. Subjected to ever-increasing pressure – the woodwork twice came to the assistance of the Mainbrace team worked very hard for each other and managed to keep the score at 1-1 and a draw in the end was a fair result.
