Matches played Saturday 4th October 2008
SC Electrical back on winning trail as The Lair's unbeaten start ends.
For the first time this season, windy and cold playing conditions greeted the Amateur League teams and these were not the most encouraging conditions for an SC Electrical side who were looking to bounce back against The Lair following the narrowest of defeats the week previous, and this appeared likely to be a difficult task against a hitherto unbeaten side.

After a slow start, SC Electrical settled into their game and began to pass the ball well and soon opened the scoring through Lewis Poucher, but the advantage was allowed to slip when a bit of poor defending just before the interval allowed Paul French to equalise.

The Lair, whose side this season contains a few new faces, resumed really strongly but SC stood up to the onslaught, and responded in the best possible fashion, with Jon Riley netting following a corner.

From this point, SC took control of the game, and Chris Herring scored a fine individual goal to extend the lead further, and he later added his second success to make the game safe, after linking well with Mike Wordingham in a quick break down the right.

Both Kingburn Athletic Reserves and Quaddy Rangers have made reasonable starts to the campaign, and their clash at Hessle looked to be an interesting encounter, and so the game, which was played in a sporting fashion, proved as the score changed from one way to the other.

Kingburn are a side who work hard for, and support each other, and took the lead inside the opening 15 minutes but the lead was pegged back when Quaddy were awarded a penalty which Mike Newdick converted.

The exchanges suggested either side could take the lead, but a decisive raid down the left wing saw Paul Fenton cross the ball at pace and at the ideal height for Jon Marshall to arrive and place a perfect header past Kingburn keeper Keith Simmonds, who was helpless to prevent the ball hitting the back of the net.

The game continued to be played at a fast pace, and Kingburn controversially equalised while Quaddy appealed for an offside whistle. Quaddy found themselves battling against the odds when Jon Laverack was dismissed for a second yellow card, and Kingburn took advantage to snatch a winning goal following the pin point corner kicking of Lee Mason.

With the wind blowing downfield, Pinefleet Wolfreton’s game against Raine was never going to be a game for the purist, and Pinefleet made first use of the wind assistance and started strongly and pinned Raine back in there own half.

Raine did show glimpses of good ability as they broke from deep on occasion, but 20 minutes in, Pinefleet took the lead when Gareth Monkman swung over a corner which the wind got hold off, and Andy Hemmings couldn't miss from a yard out.

Pinefleet began to dominate possession, and a second goal followed when Gary Marsden hit a shot which eluded the keeper and looped in with wind assistance.

Pinefleet were peppering the Raine goal and it was only some incredible saves by keeper Daniel Johnson that kept the score unchanged, but with only minutes remaining in the half, Pinefleet managed to add a third, when Liam Stafford hit a volley that squirmed under the keeper.

The second half began as the first finished with Pinefleet on top and a neat interchange between Marsden and Dave Laycock, enabled Stafford to race clear and finish well.

Raine never stopped and were almost rewarded with a goal, but Pinefleet’s stand-in keeper Tony Barley saved well from close range. Raine continued to press for a consolation goal, but were hit on the break and Pinefleet increased their advantage with a fifth goal when a pinpoint cross from Monkman was finished by Stafford - at the 2nd attempt - to complete his hat trick.

Raine's never say die attitude was finally rewarded when substitute Alan Whitehead struck a consolation goal, but still Pinefleet had the final when Stuart Cooke finished from close range. It tricky conditions this was an excellent game, controlled well by Referee Darren Parkinson.

AFC Preston were again unable to open their points account after being embroiled in the usual great footballing contest with Crown FC. A very competitive, and very equal match was decided by a mistake in the Preston defence from which Crown took full advantage……and the match spoils.

For the third successive week AFC Hull took on a team who have topped the Division 1 table – although the table is very flexible at present – and this week it was AFC West Hull B’s turn to visit the 3G pitch at Inglemire Lane for a noon start.

The visitors were full of confidence after their unbeaten start to the campaign and began brightly in an open and competitive fifteen minutes.

The deadlock was broken on 16 minutes in AFC Hull’s favour when pacy front man Sam Nicholson latched on to a through ball from Tony Tummon, and went clear to finish low inside the keeper’s far post.

AFC Hull grew in confidence and created a number of chances that were saved well by West Hull keeper Paul Davies, keeping his team in the game. West Hull struggled to break down the well-organised home defence and midfield who closed ranks effectively yet were a constant threat on the break.

It was from a break just before the half time whistle that strike duo Tummon and Nicholson combined again and Nicholson to fire home from 8 yards from an acute angle.

The second half saw AFC West Hull come out determined to make amends for their below par first half display, but despite enjoying more possession they struggled to create clear chances, although they were unlucky on 56 minutes when AFC Hull defender Jaime Gascoigne cleared a goal bound shot off the line.

AFC West Hull got themselves back in the game on 62 minutes by pulling a goal back following good interplay to finish from close range, Lewis Hoy leaving Craig Lindley in the AFC Hull goal with little chance to save.

As AFC West Hull pushed on in search of the equaliser they left increasingly more space at the back and were skating on thin ice a number of times but keeper Davies got them off the hook with a number of reaction saves.

However, after 74 minutes AFC Hull substitute Jason Watson announced his arrival in the game by beating the offside trap to race clear of the defence and went one-on-one with keeper Davies, chipping over him and into the empty net.

West Hull then threw the proverbial kitchen sink at the home defence with four and more up front and wave after wave of long balls were rewarded with a second goal on 85 minutes to set the scene for a frantic last five minutes but AFC Hull held on to secure their third successive win.

Geoff Wednesday finally broke their scoring duck against Spring Bank Tigers, and on a match sequence between the sides, honours are even and remained so after a 2-2 draw.

The usual close encounter from the first whistle, was superbly controlled by young referee Richard Wallis, though the scoreboard remained blank until Danny Munro ended Wednesday’s goal drought, scoring literally on the halftime whistle.

With the wind now in Wednesday’s faces, a struggle was expected, but instead Adam Grimmer extended the lead to 2 0.

This was the signal for Spring Bank to throw everything at their opponents and Alan Mohamad was on target twice to ensure his side deservedly pinched a point.

The gale force winds on the Humber foreshore at Paull came close to prompting referee John Redfern to postpone the game between Paull Wanderers and Hull Athletic, but after consideration, he decided to continue and Hull Athletic opted to make first use of the conditions, and Paull were made to camp in their own half for most of the first 45 minutes.

Hull Athletic opened the scoring, somewhat inevitably, with Mike Nagi hitting a thirty yarder into the top corner of the net, and shortly afterwards, the lead doubled when Gareth Jones hit the same spot, this time from the edge of the area, both goals giving Paull keeper Liam Smith, no chance.

Paull created an opening after half an hour when Mark Darnell found the ball at his feet, and he found Terry Thompson in front of goal, and he slotted the ball home to reduce the deficit.

Hopes of further recovery were dashed inside five minutes when the ball was lobbed into the Paull area, finding Nagi who made no mistake for a second goal. The lead was almost extended further when a speculative shot from out of the Hull Athletic defence rattled the Paull crossbar.

In the second period, roles were reversed, and Hull Athletic were forced onto the back foot, and Paull reduced the arrears when Darren Dennison came out of defence to slot the ball to Thompson who again hit the target.

Thompson should have completed his hat-trick, and Paull’s recovery, when he beat the offside trap and the keeper, but the wind sent the ball sailing over the bar.

The conditions allowed Paull little chance of playing any sort of good passing football and with no further scoring in the game, Paull’s poor start to the season, which was not what was envisaged, continued.

AFC Preston 2nds secured a point from a 2-2 draw with Swiss Cottage, despite struggling to contain the speedy Swiss front line. Preston have been handicapped by the lack of a regular goalkeeper since the first game of the season, but goals from Stephen Sillitoe and Ricky McNee ensured some reward was taken from the game.

South Holderness have had what could, at best, be described as a stop-start season in Division 2, but rattled up double figures against a Hull Inter Sports side which is still finding its feet.

Billy Hurst was Inter’s tormentor-in-chief, netting a double hat-trick for South Holderness.
