Matches played Saturday 25th October 2008 Geoff Wednesday plan fails to work out as AFC Hull signify their intentions. A very breezy lunchtime start at the 3G pitch at Hull University saw AFC Hull facing Geoff Wednesday in Division 1 of the Amateur League, and having won the toss, Geoff Wednesday opted to make use of the wind assistance, but the match play did not quite turn out as planned, as Wednesday were forced onto the back foot by a young AFC Hull side who kept the ball on the ground and passed well, countering the conditions, and creating plenty of chances.
AFC Hull took the lead after just six minutes when striker Tony Tummon made a strong run down the left wing and cut in to send a swerving shot from the edge of the box leaving stand-in keeper Ian Bruce no chance.
Against the run of play, Richard Hook equalised for Geoff Wednesday when the home team gave the ball away cheaply in midfield, creating space for him to run through, one on one with the keeper, and finish in the bottom corner on 12 minutes.
This signalled the start of one way traffic, with AFC Hull dominating possession and they regained the lead on 17 minutes when midfielder Dale Carty surged passed the opposition full back and into the box, and blasted the ball home past the keeper, in what was virtually his final contribution to the game as he left the field injured minutes later.
Mark Friston extended the lead to 3-1 on the half-hour mark, as Hull turned superiority into goals and on 37 minutes the lead was further extended when Tony Tummon dribbled through the defence and stayed on his feet despite being impeded by a defender and the keeper, before being finally pushed down, leaving Referee Crickmore with an easy penalty decision. Top scorer Sam Nicholson stepped up to the spot to convert the penalty.
Winger Mark Friston was giving the Geoff Wednesday defence a torrid time and grabbed his second goal of the game just before half time.
The playing conditions deteriorated in the second half and this dampened enthusiasm to an extent, and fewer chances were created, although this was also due to Geoff Wednesday’s defence becoming more organised, playing the offside trap, but this was a dangerous tactic which AFC Hull strikers Nicholson and Tummon beat in 59th and 73rd minutes respectively.
Geoff Wednesday were awarded a penalty, which should have resulted in a consolation goal, with five minutes left on the watch, but Hull keeper Craig Lindley maintained his 100% record of penalty saves this season, and having blocked the shot, was able to watch as the Wednesday player following in, blaze over the bar.
Hessle Sporting Club are making a habit of being involved in high scoring games, but once again lost out after staging a fight-back, on this occasion against AFC Preston 2nd.
Preston went into a two-goal lead, but a brace of goals in response by Jakub Skiba brought the scores back level, before Preston stepped up to regain the lead.
The game continued at a fast pace and Skiba completed his hat-trick to again bring the scores level, but a further goal inside the last five minutes by Preston left insufficient time for Hessle to respond again.
Pinefleet Wolfreton Tigers were dominant in Division 2 last season, and earned promotion, but are finding games a little more difficult this time around, and needed to take points off Hull Athletic, who themselves are well placed, to remain in touch with the table topping teams.
The game proved to be a tight affair, and could have gone either way, but in the final analysis was won by a goal which was worthy of securing the points.
Gareth Jones gave Hull Athletic a first half lead finishing off a good move between Danny Turner and Athletic’s new box of tricks, Ezra Kitungano, after which the action remained nip and tuck with both sides going close.
It was ironic, that Pinefleet’s closest effort, which rattled the crossbar, should be immediately turned into a Hull Athletic attack by keeper Shaun Leamon, who launched a route one clearance downfield which was latched onto by Danny Turner and his 25-yard volley fizzed into the Pinefleet net leaving keeper Paul Ellis with no chance.
Pinefleet came back to reduce the deficit with a neatly finished goal by centre forward Chris Bucknell, and almost grabbed a point when experienced substitute Andy Clark’s free kick brought an outstanding save out of keeper Leamon, but despite late pressure, the score line remained unchanged.
Gale winds again at the pitch on Paull Foreshore looked to spoil the game between Paull Wanderers and Anlaby Park but the teams overcame the elements and played good football from start to finish.
Both sides created good chances, the best two falling to Paull in the 2nd half when a Mark Sexton cross found Tommy Donnelly who shot a foot wide, and Donnelly was also the culprit when he picked up the ball up at half way and dribbled all the way past the Anlaby midfield and defence, but then shot wide.
The sides will probably be happy to have shared the points, although more so for Paull, for whom this result ends a bad run of losses.
AFC Preston’s senior side finally returned to winning ways in last week’s Senior Cup, and in looking to belatedly open their league account, would probably have chosen an easier opposition than Pinefleet Wolfreton, but this was nevertheless, a game they relished.
The conditions on the day were never going to be the best for attractive football, but both sides played very well from the start, Preston playing into the wind in the first half, resulting in pressure being placed on their defence, as Pinefleet created some good chances.
The deadlock was eventually broken when the Pinefleet striker composed himself and slotted the ball home, and soon afterwards a dubious offside decision allowed Pinefleet to double their lead, leaving Preston with a feeling of déjà vu at halftime.
Preston sent out the rallying call at half time and got themselves up for the second half and with the wind at their backs were able to apply the same sort of pressure to which they had previously been subjected.
The Geovanni influence was again evident as Adam Jackson sent in an unstoppable free kick to open Preston’s account, and following on from this success, the pressure continued and David Marshall floated in a superb free kick from which Mark Rogers glanced in a header.
The game was now evenly balanced, but Pinefleet’s attacking options were handicapped by the loss of influential midfielder Andy Waller who was forced off through injury, and this allowed Preston to apply even more pressure.
Preston achieved the breakthrough when Simon Kew was bundled over in the penalty box and, for the second week running, he stepped up and sealed the win with a brilliant strike.
Quaddy Rangers began their game against Raine FC at a fast pace, and twice took the lead through Simon Start, but Raine levelled on each occasion.
A second phase then saw Quaddy double their tally with a brace from Danny Thompson, and this set Quaddy on a roll, and when Start, who had an outstanding game, collected the ball 40 yards out, he controlled it instantly and volleyed into the top corner of the net to complete his hat-trick. Quaddy came off at half time having amassed a convincing 8-2 lead, as Mikey Thompson and Jamie Marshall(2) joined in the scoring spree.
The second half saw Quaddy take their foot off the gas, allowing Raine to record a third goal, after which several openings were wasted by Quaddy before Jamie Marshall stood up and slotted the ball home to complete the game’s second hat-trick.
