Matches played Saturday 29th November 2008 Quaddy come within a whisker of ending Sutton Fields proud record. With a poor forecast threatening matches again, it came as quite a relief that a bitterly cold day was the worst weather teams had to face, although a descending fog had also to be contended with after the low, but bright sun which had made visibility difficult at times, had gone down.
Unbeaten Amateur League Premier Division leaders Sutton Fields Rangers were quickly out of the blocks against Quaddy Rangers and were soon enjoying a goal lead, but, as Quaddy warmed to the task ahead, they pulled the deficit back through Simon Start.
If the task facing them was not difficult enough already, Quaddy aided Sutton in regaining the lead, when they were awarded a throw in Sutton’s half, but, in intending to deliver the ball back into play quickly, Simon Start’s throw was misdirected to an opponent, resulting in a second goal being conceded.
Quaddy did not let this setback affect them, and before the interval an equaliser from Mike Newdick ensured that the break was taken with the game all square, and with Quaddy, who were performing well, still looking to become the first side to lower Sutton’s colours.
Enterprising football was played by both sides during the second period but the game remained at stale mate, until, with ten minutes to go, two Quaddy defenders impeded each other, and leaving Sutton Fields with another gifted goal.
Quaddy were left with no option but to press forward to try to rescue a point, and thought that they had succeeded in the dying minutes when Simon Start broke into, and was brought down, in the penalty box.
The normally reliable penalty ace, Mike Newdick stepped up to convert, but on this occasion scuffed his shot allowing Sutton keeper Liam Walker to make a comfortable save, and protect his sides 100% record.
Unexpected problems were encountered at Blackburn Leisure’s pitch at Brough prior to the home side’s fixture with AFC Preston, and though matters were resolved in terms of playing the game, the situation was not acceptable, as teams were unnecessarily made to change outside in freezing fog.
Preston were determined to make up for their shoddy display in the cup last week, and adopted a positive attitude and attacked from the first minute, piling on the pressure, and confusion in the Blackies defence brought the first goal for Simon Kew.
Following this unusually positive start, Preston were looking as though they would run away with the game but a defensive error – a spate of which are uncharacteristically plaguing them this season – led to captain Simon Matson, in trying to retrieve the situation only succeeding in putting the ball into his own net.
However, the setback spurred Preston on, and in a buoyant first half Preston scored another five goals, four more to Simon Kew and one to Dan Richardson.
With a 6-1 half time score, you could forgive Preston for taking it easy and Blackies giving up, but neither side did and the second half turned into a more even game of football.
Preston were able to make a few changes and give more run-outs to three players who have suffered with injury for the most of this season, one of whom, Darren Wilson, came on and scored a fantastic goal.
Two more goals from man of the match Kew sealed the game for Preston, but further changes in defence produced a lack of understanding and allowed Blackburn to score a consolation goal. Great credit must go to Blackies who refused to give up and continued to plug away - the return match on Preston’s substantially larger pitch should prove interesting.
The game at Paull Foreshore, brought together two sides in Division 1 – Paull Wanderers and Duke of Wellington - who were hoping to record their first three point game of the season.
Paull played the better football from the start and, unlike every other of their games this season, were first on the score sheet inside twenty minutes, the goal coming from veteran Terry Thompson who finished off a good all round team move after being picked out by Mark Sexton.
Thompson should have recorded his second goal within the next five minutes, but missed a chance he really should have put away, and this was indicative of the Paull team who were making chance after chance but could not find the finishing touch.
This changed momentarily when James Sexton hit a tremendous second goal from just outside the area, and though Paull were in control, a meagre two goal haul meant a recovery by Wellington was possible, when, on balance, both teams knew that the game should have been out of sight.
As expected, The Duke came out for a battle in the second half, and with Paull remaining in second gear, the Duke remained well in contention - but without really testing the Paull keeper Liam Smith too much….until, midway through the half, the referee gave Duke a free kick inside the Paull penalty area which resulted in every Paull player standing on their goal line.
The free kick was duly despatched into the net by Matty Robinson and this gave Duke the lift they required and they pressed and pressed but without any luck.
Paull only had two good chances in the 2nd half, which was indicative of the pressure they had to withstand, though one of the chances almost turned to gold but Tommy Donnelly hit the upright.
The final whistle signalled Paull’s first league win, but success for the Duke will not be far away if they can replicate their second half form and commitment on a regular basis.
Geoff Wednesday were involved in a very close game at Swiss Cottage, and took the lead when Darren Norton scored from the penalty spot after 15 minutes but with the celebrations still going on, Swiss kicked off and three passes later had levelled.
The match remained pretty even until a lapse of concentration from a corner was capitalised on by Swiss, enabling them to take all the points.
Hull Athletic enjoyed an excellent contest with Hessle Sporting at the University and after ten minutes a great solo goal by Louis Nagi, who looked completely at home in his first game as striker, put the home side on the right track.
The game was not all one way, but Nagi went on to complete his hat trick while Danny Turner got his confidence back with a brace - the goals being interspersed by three scored by Hessle.
A league meeting between AFC Preston 2nd and Anlaby Park followed their cup clash, and the game seemed to be going in the same direction as the previous encounter as Preston led by a Ricky McNee goal early in the first half and were in control, until the ball went out for a throw-in.
The throw, taken by Preston was deemed to be a foul throw, which led to comments made in frustration, and in turn to a red card, and this incident changed the course of the game.
The shorthanded Preston side tried to overcome the handicap, but tired during the second half and Anlaby Park took advantage to avenge their cup defeat with a solid win with goals from Tony Cardwell (2), Steve Embley and Nick Morley (2).
Runaway Division One leaders AFC Hull made the trip to Pickering Park for a re-arranged League Cup 1st round tie with AFC West Hull C, who are not having the easiest of times on the pitch of late.
Although the West Hull C defence had plenty of years of combined experience, they were found out by the pace and movement of the visitors who opened the scoring after 10 minutes when winger Mark Friston made a strong run to the bye line and squared the ball to midfielder Jason Watson who slid home from close range.
Two minutes later the architect of the first goal, scored himself, Friston again cutting in to the bye-line before drilling in the ball from an acute angle, beating the keeper at near post.
On 22 minutes the pace of AFC Hull top scorer Sam Nicholson saw him break from half way to take the ball past the keeper, and the procession continued after 34 minutes when substitute Rio Buckley, who had replaced right winger Nathan Nicol who picked up a knock, linked with Friston who provided a great return cross for Buckley to net. A further goal by Nicholson just before the break gave AFC Hull an unassailable lead.
AFC Hull did not let up after the break, and goals followed at regular intervals with a brace each for Watson and Rio Buckley, which saw both record hat-tricks, while Tony Tummon also scored twice in addition to single successes from midfielder Sean McFaul and substitute Chris Buckley.
West Hull tried bravely to stem the tide, and worked hard, and played fairly to the final whistle, but cup draws are sometimes cruel….
