Swiss gain revenge for cup defeat, and boost League standing.
It was no surprise after another week of miserable wet weather that an early decision was made to postpone all Amateur League fixtures which had been scheduled to take place on public parks, and whilst a little more hope was held out for fixtures on other sites, the reality was that, by Saturday afternoon, just one pitch – at Paull - was declared playable.

The pitch at Paull Foreshore rarely succumbs to the weather, and Paull Wanderers were looking forward to a return fixture against Swiss Cottage, as the sides had met a couple of weeks previously in the League Junior Cup, and Paull were looking to repeat the success they enjoyed that day.

Swiss Cottage had the previous encounter very much in mind when they took the field, and, playing with the assistance of the wind, came out fired up, and after 20 minutes were rewarded when a through ball from Shaun Scotthorne was picked up by ace scorer Ben Bassett, and he slotted the ball home.

Both sides tried to play entertaining football, but far too many passes went astray, and sloppy tackling abounded, and yet this made for an exciting game as chances were created, but good saves by both keepers prevented any further scores, until shortly before the interval, when a massive upfield clearance by Swiss keeper John Scott was helped back towards Paull keeper Liam Smith by a defender, but with insufficient power, and Bassett nipped in, rounded the stranded keeper and just managed to squeeze the ball home.

The second half saw Paull in dominant form, utilising their turn to benefit from the wind assistance, but it seemed that a goal which was so desperately needed, would not materialise as Swiss twice made goal line clearances and then rode their luck as a Karl Smith shot thudded against the crossbar, with keeper Scott beaten, but the ball then ran safely away.

Paull persisted with attack after attack, and with eight minutes left Darren Dennison finally scored following a corner.

Swiss staged a ‘backs to the wall’ finale to protect their lead, and did so thanks to yet another goal line clearance, this time by Craig Fitzpatrick.

Perhaps not the most convincing win for Swiss, but assisted by the inactivity of other teams, the three points gained lifted them into second position in Division 1, and that, and revenge for their cup defeat left them with a feel good factor.

As the Xmas break approaches – there are no Amateur League fixtures scheduled for 20th or 27th December – it is hoped that a break in the inclement weather will allow teams to get back into action for the final time in 2008 this coming Saturday.
