Matches played Saturday 17th January 2009 Pinefleet stumble on resumption, but Quaddy back with a bang. With a couple of late venue switches, as some pitches were again declared unplayable, it was possible to stage all the scheduled Amateur League fixtures for the first time in many weeks, although in part, some pitches were quite testing.
Pinefleet Wolfreton have been sidetracked to some extent this season by cup commitments, and this, added to postponed games due to adverse playing conditions has left the side behind with Premier Division fixtures, and with the game against Kingburn Athletic Reserves given the go ahead, they were hoping this tough fixture would be the start of a successful and sustained run.
Kingburn started the brighter and utilised the conditions which were in their favour and Pinefleet were forced onto the back foot but very few chances were created in the opening quarter.
When a chance fell to Kingburn from a set-piece it was well taken, but Pinefleet responded positively with Dave Laycock setting up a chance for Graham Waudby with a through ball, but unfortunately he struck his effort wide.
Pinefleet were settling into more of a rhythm and Tony Barley was unlucky not to equalise when he headed wide from a corner, and the half ended with Kingburn’s noses still in front.
Pinefleet started brightly in the second half and equalised early on when Gareth Monkman scored direct from a corner, but this setback spurred Kingburn into action and utilising set pieces, they began to pin Pinefleet in defensive situations.
The important next goal produced a hint of controversy, as Kingburn were awarded a corner, which was felt by Pinefleet to be an incorrect decision, and Kingburn capitalised with a well taken headed goal.
Pinefleet were by no means out of the game, and continued to create chances which went begging, and a frustrated side found themselves in deeper trouble when Kingburn added a third goal, and Pinefleet’s dismal day was compounded by the dismissal of a player who (over)questioning an offside decision.
Quaddy Rangers travelled to Stonebridge Playing Fields at Greatfield to face Raine FC looking to resume fixtures with their first match since the end of November, and hoping to complete a league double over the division newcomers.
Quaddy started off slowly, perhaps understandably, but after about 20 minutes forwards Mike Newdick and Simon Start began to gel and make a difference, with Newdick becoming particularly effective in bagging a hat-trick, and a further goal from Dave Bettney concluded a great ‘second half of the first half’ performance!!
The second half proper saw Newdick playing a supporting role for his strike partner, setting up the first goal for Start, who also went on to complete his hat-trick.
To conclude a torrid afternoon for Raine, Mike Thompson stuck Quaddy’s final goal from the edge of the area, his shot taking a deflection and the ball looped up over keeper Daniel Johnson and into the back of the net.
Although given something of a run around by a Quaddy side that played with precision passing throughout a great football display, the Raine team remained up beat and were still trying to redress the balance at the final whistle.
Eddie Beedle have long been a side who play stylish football, but somehow flatter to deceive, but current form suggests they have found a new belief, and after demolishing the league leaders a fortnight ago, faced fellow title challengers, but possibly a ring rusty, AFC West Hull, and seemingly continued their convincing form as goals came at regular intervals thoughout the first half.
Craig Copley opened Beedle’s account after eight minutes, and four minutes later Gary Morfitt weighed in with his side’s second. If West Hull thought Beedle would then sit back, they were mistaken as Chris Tooley (18 minutes) and Ryan Copley, on the half hour, completed a dominant half.
AFC West Hull bucked up their ideas when the action resumed, and two goals in three minutes shortly after the restart suggested a fight back was possible, but the game settled down and when the final goal from Matty Carr went in after 75 minutes is was in Eddie Beedle’s favour, and settled the issue.
Swiss Cottage have endured a topsy-turvy season but got back to winning ways in Division 1 with an emphatic victory over a well-organised Hull Athletic side.
Only 10 minutes into the game, Hull went in front with a well taken goal from Louis Nagi, and.Hull dominated the first 20 minutes but a stubborn Swiss defence kept their scoring chances down to a minimum.
Some hard work by Swiss slowly enabled them to get the better of their opponents and on the half hour a great run and strike by Ben Bassett levelled the scores. Hull almost regained the lead but a well-taken free kick was pushed on to the cross bar by Swiss keeper John Scott.
Swiss kept pressing at the Hull defence and just before half time went in front with another great strike from in-form Ben Bassett.
Hull came out in the second half looking determined to get something out of the game and were rewarded with an equaliser from Ezra Kitungano five minutes into the half, but Swiss again took control and were dictating most of the play, and with 12 consecutive passes from defence to attack, went back into the lead with a 20 yard shot from Craig Fitpatrick.
On the hour Ben Bassett completed his hat-trick with a well taken volley which left the Hull keeper Shaun Leamon stranded.
Swiss’s victory was assured when substitute Clint Brant scored with a header five minutes before the final whistle.
Paull Wanderers went into their game against AFC Preston 2nd in buoyant mood after their best run of results of the season, but somehow endured one of those days when they did not appear ‘to be at the races’.
That the game panned out this way was even more surprising as Paull opened the scoring inside the first ten minutes through Danny Wilbor who was found by a great ball from Tommy Donnelly.
After the opening goal, neither side was able to take a grip of the game, as both showed poor form, but an equaliser fell to Preston’s after Paull failed to clear way upfield, conceded any unnecessary corner, and Peter Morton was allowed a free header.
At this stage of the game, Paull enjoyed their best spell of play and took the lead when Michael Ward ran at the Preston defence and finished well. Paull’s purple patch of form only lasted around ten minutes, but the side were able to go into the break in the lead.
Paull were unable to re-assert themselves in the second period, and Preston were allowed to make as much space as they wanted, enabling Kev Fenton to bring the scores level. A second goal for Peter Morton turned the game in Preston’s favour
A late switch of venue to Cottingham enabled Spring Bank Tigers game with Geoff Wednesday to go ahead, and a fairly even first half saw the teams divided by a single success from Spring Bank’s speedy striker Azad Hassan.
The second half saw goal line clearances and the woodwork denying Wednesday before a gifted goal and a good finish, both converted by Shoho Hoosiny, secured the win for the Tigers.
Circumstances had dictated that Willerby Holiday Homes were playing their first game in Division 2 since the Christmas break, against AFC Humber, and team managers Gary Neve and Andy Steels were concerned that the festivities may have an adverse impact on the teams performance.
Their worries however proved to be unfounded as the side showed some good early touches, with Carl Tozer blazing up and down the wings.
The first goal of the game went Willerby’s way and was well worked, started off and finished by Mark Hewitt with a neat strike, after he ran down the wing playing a clever one-two with Scott Beale.
AFC Humber then applied pressure for a good 20 minute period and Willerby were on the ropes and conceded an equaliser when a quickly taken free kick by the AFC Humber keeper caught the Willerby defence sleeping, allowing Kris Waudby to nip in and score.
This stung Willerby into displaying greater urgency, and they were rewarded with two goals just before half time, Mark Hewitt twice beating the offside trap to run through and tuck the ball away.
The second half was a tight affair after Humber had swapped their side around, but Willerby further increased their lead when a low cross from Hewitt was converted by Dave Bryant who drove his shot low into the net.
Willerby almost increased their lead, but James Harvey’s free kick from 25 yards cannoned back off the upright.
Willerby now look forward to a clash with league leaders Skippers next weekend, at a time when Skippers form is not so dominant.
Skippers extended their unbeaten record against The Courts – in another match subject to a late venue switch – but found The Courts side a much more difficult side to break down than in the past.
Skippers built up a 4-1 lead early in the second half but then found themselves repeatedly under pressure from quick breaks by Courts which should have produced more reward and a closer final score line than 4-2.
