Matches played Saturday 21st February 2009 Laycock guides Pinefleet into quarter finals. A welcome respite from a fortnight’s wet weather finally enabled most of the ERCFA Cup games – which take precedence over league fixtures – to go ahead, which will allow some normality to return to fixture planning. If the delay had been frustrating, then the wait was made to appear worthwhile as the Amateur League teams involved in the Intermediate Cup third round games all enjoyed successful outcomes, joining AFC Hull in the quarter finals of the competition.
Pinefleet Wolfreton have suffered more than most with postponements this season, and to return to action was a relief, but, possibly ring rusty, they fell behind to Reckitts Reserves after only eight minutes play, when a stunning cross field shot left keeper Tony Barley stranded.
The match was closely contested, and it seemed that the single goal would be sufficient to decide the outcome, until Pinefleet eventually equalised, with ten minutes remaining, Dave Laycock having sent a through ball into the path of substitute Steve Miller whose first time effort found the back of the net.
Extra time was required, and within a minute of the start of the energy sapping additional periods – as so often happens – Pinefleet struck again when Gary Marsden scored from close range when Reckitts failed to deal with a corner.
Pinefleet were enjoying their best spell of the game, and Reckitts were under extreme pressure and just before the extra time half time break, after a succession of corners, Graham Waudby laid the ball into the path of Dave Laycock who fired into the corner of the net.
Reckitts lifted their game to try to redress the balance but the two goal cushion enabled a now confident Pinefleet to play their way out of any trouble, with Laycock particularly showing vision with a series of telling passes.
The Lair entertained Haltemprice AFC at Hull University, and advanced through to the next round with an odd goal in five victory, while Crown FC who have tried desperately to find alternative venues to get games played on a weekly basis - finally found succeeded, switching to Brandesburton Reserves, where they took control and ran out extremely comfortable winners.
The relief in returning to action was evident from comments made by teams reporting league matches, and Swiss Cottage, who had not played for three weeks were delighted to face arch rivals Paull Wanderers in Division 1, as the two sides always have a great contests – and this encounter turned out to be no exception.
Paull seemed to settle into the game a lot more quickly than the Swiss side and were rewarded with a well-taken goal after just 10 minutes when a Darren Dennison header found the net from a corner, and for a while, Paull kept Swiss on the back foot.
The setback, however, seemed to have awoken Swiss who started to play some entertaining football, and after some good passing moves Ricky Russell slotted a neat pass through the Paull defence and classy centre forward Ben Bassett ran on and slotted the ball past the advancing keeper to level the scores on 20 minutes.
Both sides had good chances but defences seemed to be on top until Bassett found a gap when he beat Mark Sexton to the ball and fire home with a great shot from a tight angle just inside the Paull penalty area.
With the wind at their backs in the second half, Swiss utilised the advantage and on the hour Ben Bassett competed his hat-trick with a well taken goal. Paull came close on a couple of occasions but were thwarted by some brilliant saves from keeper John Scott.
Swiss pressed hard and sealed the win when substitute Shaun Scotthorne rifled in a great shot – with the chance set up by the irrepressible Bassett - which gave Paull keeper Liam Smith no chance.
The pitches at King George V, Cottingham Road, which took a pounding last time out, was in remarkably fine fettle when Quaddy Rangers faced SC Electrical in the Premier Division, where, again, players were relieved to be back in action.
SC Electrical started the game very well and took the lead within ten minutes as Quaddy struggled to get into gear, but Quaddy’s performance was improving and when Danny Garner put in a great tackle in the middle of the pitch, which saw the ball fall at his feet, he unleashed a shot from 25 yards which smashed into the top corner of the goal, and at the interval the game was all-square.
After the turnaround, which saw Quaddy introduce Dave Bettney from the bench, the game took a dramatic turn as Quaddy’s confidence soared as goals began to flow when Electrical’s suspect stand-in keeper was exposed.
Quaddy wasted a few chances before Bettney put them in front, and then a series of well directed free kicks from Mike Newdick proved rewarding as Bettney, again, and then Dave Bisland steered the ball home.
Simon Start yet again had a mixed game for Quaddy - in the first half he could not hit a barn door, but in the second, he had two chances and on each occasion slotted the ball home well.
Although the game had swung massively in Quaddy’s favour, SC Electrical were by no means over-run, but in Mark Foster, Quaddy have a goalkeeper who exudes bravery and confidence and deals extremely efficiently with everything directed at him.
Geoff Wednesday, who have picked up several points lately, began their Division 1 game with AFC Preston 2nd with the wind at their backs and were hoping that the conditions would blow a few goals in for them, but, alas, this did not happen and it was 20 minutes before either side threatened, when Richard Hook did open the scoring for Wednesday, but the response by Preston was swift and by the break, Preston had established a 2-1 lead.
In the second half, Wednesday concentrated on keeping the football on the ground which enabled Hook to score the equaliser, but again Preston pushed on and went back in front, but failing to capitalise on other chances eventually proved costly.
In the closing stages Richard Hook rounded off a super individual performance by completing his hat trick and earned his side a share of the points.
Two teams, AFC Hull and Spring Bank Tigers, who play great passing games and display high levels of technical ability faced each other on the perfect playing surface of the 3G pitch at Hull University, and a great game was in prospect, and it didn't disappoint!
Spring Bank Tigers started brightly and took the lead after five minutes when a quick break exploited a defensive opening which was punished by the pacey Spring Bank Tiger's front man Aso Hama Amen who raced on to finish with a low drive into the bottom corner of the goal.
This setback spurred AFC Hull into action and they pushed for an equaliser and on 11 minutes thought that they had succeeded when a wonderful lofted 40 yard crossfield ball from full back Ashley Smith fell perfectly for Mark Friston who raced through on goal, only to be thwarted with a great save from the Tiger's keeper Kamaran Sahid.
On 18 minutes a Chris Buckley corner picked out the head of Jason Watson who powered home a header through the crowded box from 8 yards to level the scores.
Controversy raged after 37 minutes when AFC Hull were reduced to ten men when a midfielder was shown red for inappropriate comments made to referee Martin Flynn.
Despite their numbers handicap, AFC Hull continued to look the more likely to score.
At the start of the second half, AFC Hull introduced substitutes Alex Albrow and Tony Tummon, the introduction of the latter proving to be a wise move when, on 52 minutes a free kick was awarded 25 yards out in a central position, and he struck a shot that flew straight as an arrow over the defensive wall and into the top corner leaving the Spring Bank Tigers keeper no more than an interested spectator!
After 57 minutes AFC Hull top scorer Sam Nicholson, who had been moved out to the right wing due to having 10 men, made way for the fresh legs of Scott Buckley.
Spring Bank pushed for an equaliser but were denied by resolute defending, particularly by centre half Rio Buckley who made a number of key challenges.
AFC Hull were caught out after 80 minutes when keeper Craig Lindley made an excellent charge from his box to challenge a Spring Bank forward and cleared the ball up field, but when the player stayed down, seemingly injured, AFC Hull anticipated the ball being knocked out of play, but Spring Bank continued to attack and Shaho Hossiny lofted a 35 yard shot high over the stranded goalkeeper and into the net.
Despite being a man down AFC Hull then went all out and took the game to the Tigers and were rewarded on the 86th minute when a corner was parried by the Tigers keeper but only as far as centre back Rio Buckley who leapt to send a powerful header into the net from four yards, capping his man of the match performance.
The lead was almost extended two minutes later but skipper Jaimie Gascoinge saw his header go just wide.
Staks AFC have found points hard to accumulate in Division 2, and found themselves in a ‘backs to the wall’ game with Kingburn Athletic 3rd but they defended well and rode their luck at times, and importantly scored on a breakaway through Sean Wright.
Try as Kingburn may, the ball would not go in the net, and Staks had the opportunity to wrap up the points with a penalty minutes from time – but the spot kick was dragged wide.
This did not prove costly, however, as Staks continued to defend with gusto, and protected their lead to the final whistle.
