Matches played Saturday 19th September 2009
Orchard's tribute for their friend.
With the fixture planner determining that the new Orchard Park derby should take place on only the second week of the new Amateur League season, it was fitting that the teams, AFC Orchard and the aptly named Orchard Park United, put local rivalries aside and paid their personal respects by observing a pre-match silence, to add their support as thousands of others had done across the city during the week, to their friend and fallen hero Private Johnathan Young, who tragically recently lost his life on active army duty in Afghanistan.

AFC Orchard have steadily improved since joining the league three years ago, and faced their newly formed rivals, for first claim to the estate’s top dog, but that was not really the issue as both sides played the game in a spirit which was to be commended.

AFC Orchard understandably looked the more organised side, and came out well on top, with a mixture of well-worked if occasionally fortuitous goals, and at the interval had the game sewn up.

But AFC Orchard never managed to take full control of the game, largely due to the industry of United’s Dave Taylor who seem intent on running a one man show in midfield, winning just about everything on the floor, and in his vicinity in the air, but it was the more clinical finishing of AFC Orchard which determined the outcome.

Orchard’s prowess in attack brought braces of goals for Chris Jopling, Graham Hoff and Nathan Atkinson, while Jamie and Alex Lamplough weighed in with one each, Alex’s being his first for the club.

The game provided great entertainment, and the score did not reflect the vastly improved second half performance from United, sadly after the game was beyond them.

Swiss Cottage RBL got their first Premier Division win and points of the new season with a well earned victory over Cavalier Wanderers at Oak Road.

Swiss took the game to Cavalier from the kick off and created some good chances, keeping the opposition on the back foot for most of the first half.

After 25 minutes Swiss won a free kick just inside the Cavalier half, and Craig Fitzpatrick’s pinpoint cross found Jac Longden whose looping header went over advancing keeper Jon Batte and into the net.

Swiss were unlucky not to increase their lead but some fine saves from the Cavalier keeper kept the score to 1 - 0 at the interval.

Cavalier stepped up their game in the second half and should have levelled the scores but failed to convert their chances in front of goal.

Swiss went two up when a sweeping move down the right, and a cross from Shaun Blanchard found Longden unmarked and he steered the ball past the keeper and into the bottom corner of the net.

Both sides created more chances late on but defences held firm and the score remained unchanged.

AFC Hull went into their first home league match of the season without the services of leading goalscorer Sam Nicholson, last week's goal-scorers Ian Tuttle and Tony Tummon, and defensive cornerstone Damon Brooks but welcomed back a partially fit Jamie Gascoigne.

The match began started quietly, with no clear-cut chance being carved out until midway through the half when Nathan Nicol, Mark Friston, Alex Albrow and first team debutant Billy Tuttle combined to see a shot deflected by a retreating AFC West Hull defender.

With half an hour played, AFC Hull came close to opening the scoring when an Alex Albrow pass from the touchline found striker Nathan Nicol, but Nicol's volley was collected by West Hull keeper Paul Davies.

A minute later, returning defender Jamie Gascoigne demonstrated why his presence has been missed, cutting out a quick break from West Hull.

With chances at a premium, Louis Kirk looked to have picked the lock of the West Hull offside trap, finding himself through on goal only to be pulled up by referee Mark Broxham who deemed him to be in an offside position.

A minute before half time West Hull opened the scoring, when they beat the offside trap and, while the AFC Hull defenders appealed for the flag, the ball was squared into the area where Mark Friston did well to block the first shot, but the rebound was placed home from close range to put West Hull a goal to the good.

A quick equaliser seemed on the cards when Graham Donaldson made his way down the right wing and whipped a cross into the area but the ball was successfully cleared by the West Hull defence.

Within a minute of the restart, West Hull had doubled their lead after makeshift left back Sean McFaul found himself caught out of position, allowing a cross to come into the box unchallenged, and which was finished from close range.

A few minutes later, it became clear that Jamie Gascoigne had not fully recovered from an injury which had plagued his pre-season and he made way for Jack Boreham.

AFC Hull almost got themselves back into the match but a goal-bound Liam Lewis free kick was headed off the line by a defender.

The hour mark signalled a fatal thirteen minute spell for AFC Hull, starting with the sides centre backs failing to deal with a bouncing ball in the area, allowing a West Hull striker to step inside a blast the ball home from close range for a three-nil lead.

More suicidal defending followed six minutes later when the back four failed to push up following a clearance and when a long ball came back into AFC Hull half, a grateful striker was played onside by three defenders, allowing him to successfully take on keeper Craig Lindley one-on-one and make the score four-nil.

Two minutes later the nightmare spell was complete when McFaul was again exposed at left back, leaving Craig Lindley no chance of stopping the resulting shot.

AFC Hull manager Ricky Jagger's assessment of the match as "a bad day at the office" was compounded with twelve minutes remaining when Jack Boreham failed to score from the penalty spot, after Billy Tuttle's jinking run into the penalty area had resulted in him being scythed down - Boreham hit the spot kick close to keeper Davies, who parried the ball back into the substitute's path before also saving his second attempt!!

A modicum of respect was salvaged with ten minutes remaining when Nathan Nicol broke the West Hull offside trap and powered a shot past the visitors' keeper for a consolation goal.

Cross Keys Cottingham’s Division 1 clash with Spring Bank Tigers was played at a very fast tempo game from start to finish with both teams testing the keepers early.

A goal was created from nothing when Liam Carter chased down a seemingly no hope ball into the far corner, where the Tigers full back flicked it past him, but straight to Darren Norton who immediately crossed to Wayne Kirk who looped a header over the stationary goalkeeper.

The second half started in the same frantic manner as the first, but this time Spring Bank’s Saad Bahjat took a through pass and finished well.

The next half hour saw three disallowed goals for Cross Keys, and a failed penalty shout for the Tigers and, with just three minutes remaining the game was decided when Danny Munro volleyed the ball at the Tigers keeper Hozan Bashid, and it bounced just in front of him before creeping between his legs and into the goal!!

Paull Wanderers were in dream land when they went two goals up inside seven minutes against West Hull United from a Tommy Donnelly goal after four minutes, which was put away with ease, and then a second from new signing and ex-North Ferriby player Martin Shepherd who finished off a good team move started by Danny Wilbor, and involving Karl Smith.

For reasons best known to themselves, Paull did not press home their advantage and let West Hull back into the game, and West Hull were dominating when they got a goal back through Seb Kapkowski on the half hour.

West Hull would have expected to have been back on terms when Paull’s Karl Smith conceded a penalty following a rash tackle inside the box but the resultant shot came back into play off the post.

Into the 2nd half, and again West Hull seemed to want the game more than Paull and the home side were constantly pegged back but without really looking like surrendering their lead, due to some good defending by their back four.

With two minutes remaining Paull looked to have done enough until another bad tackle inside the box, this time by James Sexton, provided West Hull with a life line and this time Darren Welsh made no mistake to level the game.

Paull had no time to respond, and were maybe just a little lucky to get away with a point after a great start to the game……
