Matches played Saturday 3rd October 2009 Attention turns (mainly) to County Cup action. The attention of the majority of Amateur League clubs turned to ERCFA Cup action last weekend, mainly in the newly extended Intermediate Competition, but also with odd teams competing in the County Senior tournament.
The first round fixtures saw Eddie Beedle travelling to face County League side Westella & Willerby Juniors and a defensive shuffle was necessary to cover for the absence of Danny Boxall, and the first unpleasant conditions of the season, with high winds and rain, posed problems for both sides in the early stages.
Eddie Beedle were first on to the score sheet through Matty Carr after a good chance had been spurned by Mike Humphries, and Carl Giblin had gone close, hitting the post from the edge of the area. The solitary goal was all that divided the teams at the break, and gave no indication of the goal glut that was to occur in the second period of the game.
Early in the second half, Beedle added to their lead with a cracking goal from Craig Copley who picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and hammered it into the net leaving the keeper to stand and watch as the ball sailed by.
Possibly feeling the job was done, Beedle became a little sloppy in their play and allowed Westella back into the game, conceding two goals in a five minutes spell, and with half an hour remaining, the scores were level.
Beedle’s response was to introduce fresh legs and change their playing system with the introduction of Mike Blowman and Craig Eskrett for scorer Matty Carr and Carl Giblin.
It did not take long for the substitutes to make an impact, with Craig Eskett finding the net only for Westella to be battle back into the game with a well-taken goal.
With 5 minutes remaining, Beedle thought they had done enough when Mike Blowman again put the visitors in front, but with 30 seconds to go a mistake by keeper Danny Hill, allowed a free kick to float into the net and take the game to extra time.
With tired legs on both sides, there were not too many chances in extra time but Westella took the lead for the first time in the game with only 10 minutes to play but Beedle responded and Craig Copley finished from close range to level the final score at 5-5 and take the tie to a penalty shoot-out.
After five penalties each, the scores were still tied, and sudden death became the order of the day. Mike Blowman stepped up to score for Eddie Beedle before the Westella nominee put his shot wide allowing Beedle to advance to the second round.
When Bev Road Rangers players were changing for their tie against East Riding Rangers, they were a little apprehensive at the prospect of playing against Humber Premier League opponents, but took to the field realising that, as under dogs, they had nothing to lose, and to try to play to the best of their ability.
Despite winning the toss, Bev Road elected to play into the strong wind and for the first 15 minutes of the game found themselves understandably under pressure, but some great defending ensured that the scores remained blank.
Bev Road manager Wayne Parsons acted as a calming influence on his players, and encouraged them to play the ball on the ground, and the game started to turn around, with East Riding starting to find themselves under pressure, and only three good saves from Riding keeper prevented Bev Road from going in front, but then, a long wind assisted clearance forced an error by the Bev Road defence and East Riding capitalised and a neatly placed lob over keeper Benjamin Gallagher put the visitors into the lead.
Bev Road refused to be dismayed and encouraged by stand in skipper Dave Fielder, put East Riding under constant pressure, but for all Bev Road’s possession, half time arrived with an unchanged scoreline.
During the break Bev Road plotted to utilise the wind advantage, and not over-hit the ball, and early in the second half camped in their opponents half - underlined by Andy Lambert having to take six corners, one after another, and on the last corner East Riding only cleared the ball as far as Bev Road captain Dave Fielder who smashed the equaliser from 35 yards past East Riding keeper.
Bev Road kept up the pressure and following a great run by Darryl Deveney a free kick was awarded on the edge of the area, and Andy Lambert curled in a great ball but was foiled by the woodwork.
The tie looked to be heading only one way as the East Ridings keeper made some more great saves and extra time was looming until a great corner was curled in the net by set piece expert Andy Lambert, putting Bev Road in front at last with only three minutes remaining.
Experienced skipper, and man of the match Dave Fielder, then encouraged and ensured his players retained possession as the seconds ticked away to the final whistle.
On a very windy day Swiss Cottage RBL managed to pass the ball about with confidence against Division 2 newcomers Hull Corinthians, who were additionally handicapped by a late arrival, and dominated the first half but failed to convert early chances.
After 20 minutes Swiss made their superiority tell and took the lead through top scorer Jac Longden with a well taken shot that beat the Corinthians keeper. More chances went begging until a neat move down the right brought a shot from Karl Fitzpatrick which the Corinthians keeper seemed to have stopped, but unluckily stumbled over the line with the ball in his hands, and Swiss were 2 goals up.
Corinthians put together a couple of good moves and were rewarded when the Swiss defence failed to clear the ball and the Corinthian striker slotted the ball home from close range, to keep the game finely balanced.
In the second half, and the wind continued to make ball control difficult, but both sides remained committed to pushing forward in search of the next goal, and the decisive moment came when a neat pass from Jac Longden found Ben Bassett clear of the defence as he neatly chipped the ball over the keeper to put Swiss 3-1 in the lead.
Corinthians didn't give up and created a few chances which the Swiss defence managed to contain but in a make or break situation, Corinthians were always going to be vulnerable, and still pushing up looking for a goal, were caught out when Jac Longden beat the offside trap to place the ball past the approaching keeper and into the net.
With 10 minutes remaining, and the game beyond Hull Corinthians, Jac Longden completed his hat-trick, and extended his taking his tally for the season to seven in four games.
Paull Wanderers were potentially on a hiding to nothing when drawn against regular Senior Country Cup favourites Filey Town, but the Paull team refused to be overawed by their illustrious opponents and first half of the game was tight and it was a credit to Paull that the half finished scoreless.
The pitch at the foreshore had not suffered too much from the windy conditions in the first half, but the wind velocity increased in the second period, with the Filey side adapting better to the elements, and ten minutes into the action, Paull conceded a goal when keeper Liam Smith mishandled the wet ball which slipped through his grasp and into the net.
Paull had no option now but to go for broke, and changed to a more attacking formation and though some chances were created, they were no better than half chances and Filey showed that killer touch in front of goal with two further late scores.
On the whole, Paull are performing well, but lack that main man up front to score the goals for them.
The weather conditions were not the best for the start of one of the few League games to take place, but the Division 2 game at the Dales, North Bransholme between Grassroots Sports for All (BHE) and Kingstown proved to be entertaining fare.
Kingstown took an early lead but Grassroots responded soon afterwards with a goal from Darren Hall.
Kingstown regained the lead as the game speeded up, but were again pegged back when Grassroots were awarded a penalty, which Liam O’Connor stepped forward to take. His hot produced a fine save from Kingstown keeper Rich Grindley, but the ball stood up invitingly and O’Connor was able to follow up and score.
Kingstown went in front for the third time with 15 minutes to go, and almost protected their lead to the end, but with just a few moments to go to the final whistle, Grassroots’ Bryn Moore chased down a sweet through ball and slotted home a point saving goal.
