Matches played Saturday 10th October 2009
Pinefleet just contain Swiss roll.
With the Amateur League now into its fourth full week of fixtures, the league tables are becoming more meaningful and the latest Premier Division fixtures pitted together the second and third placed teams when Pinefleet Wolfreton visited Swiss Cottage RBL who have settled well into their new environment after promotion.

The game turned out to be a really exciting encounter, but began with a one sided slant as Pinefleet set off at 100mph, dominating proceedings completely and racing into a three goal lead within twenty minutes with an unlikely scoring partnership of centre backs Shaun Drury and Graham Waudby, plus a further goal from Scotsman Mally ‘McTavish’ Brown.

Swiss stemmed the impending rout, and managed a few good chances, despite generally remaining on the back foot, but from Pinefleet’s point of view, the interval came at the wrong time as it interrupted their flow.

Possibly believing the game was won, Pinefleet could not recapture their early flowing football when the game resumed, and by the 55th minute Swiss had responded twice, first when substitute Shaun Scotthorne, who was returning after suspension, got on the end of a corner kick to head in with some style, and again moments later when he was left unmarked in the area, and found by Carl Fitzpatrick’s pass following the latter’s jinking run down the right wing.

Pinefleet did still manage to create chances but either the woodwork, keeper John Scott, or goal line clearances kept them out, while Swiss constantly posed a threat on the break.

Pinefleet were unable to substitute Shaun Drury when he sustained an injury, but managed to hang onto their narrow lead to the final whistle, though their hearts were in their mouths when Scotthorne came desperately close to his hat-trick and equalising, but his lobbed shot not only cleared the keeper but also the crossbar.

The winning points enabled Pinefleet to move into pole position in the league when previous leaders Quaddy Rangers were held to what seemed an unlikely draw against AFC West Hull.

Quaddy started their game in a similar vein to Pinefleet, quickly establishing a two goal lead through Mike Nagi and Simon Start – whose effort took a massive deflection – but against the run of play, West Hull pulled a goal back, and yet, this did little to lessen Quaddy’s domination, but it is goals which count, and at least twenty chances went begging before the half time break brought respite for West Hull.

With the second half got underway, West Hull started playing the football which had been lacking in the first period, and two quick goals turned the match around completely, leaving a very frustrated Quaddy suddenly chasing the game to rescue at least a point.

With 10 minutes remaining, Quaddy managed to balance the scoreline when Duane Grantley added his name to their marksmen, after which Quaddy created and missed more chances, but so also, did West Hull, and points shared, overall, was probably a fair result.

AFC Hull travelled to East Hull to face hitherto unbeaten Eddie Beedle, and were bolstered by the return of strikers Tony Tummon and Sam Nicholson (from the bench), and defensive pairing Cullem Harrison and Jaimie Gascoigne, whilst full back John Spicer and promoted second team midfielder Lee Chapman, were making their senior playing debuts.

The game began with a pattern which has become familiar this season, with AFC Hull pressing the opposition back and creating a number of opportunities, the most clear cut coming on 17 minutes when a Tony Tummon cross was met by Darren Newton and his driven shot was lifted over the bar only by some last ditch defending.

Just three minutes later, striker Tummon powered a shot at goal only to see keeper Danny Hill parry the effort out for a corner and on 22 minutes, usual striker Newton, on this occasion playing a deeper midfield role, sent an inch perfect pass through the line to Tummon whose shot was blocked by the keeper, before skipper Mark Friston shot the rebound wide.

AFC Hull were looking much more composed than of late, with Tummon and powerful front man Nathan Nuttall causing the home team all sorts of problems, while the defence also showed a great deal of improvement, dealing efficiently with any breaks by Eddie Beedle.

As halftime approached, Tony Tummon was presented with a golden opportunity to open the scoring when his hard work left him one-on-one with the keeper only to see his shot parried out for a corner, and soon afterwards more hard work by Darren Newton saw him win the ball in midfield, beat a man and pick a precise ball through the defence to the feet of Tummon, again leaving him with only the keeper to beat but the keeper again won the battle, blocking his effort as he tried to round him.

AFC Hull made a switch at the interval, replacing Lee Chapman with pacy young winger Liam Lewis, and the visitors very nearly took the lead on 48 minutes when Newton blasted a dipping effort just over the crossbar from nearly 30 yards out.

On 57 minutes the hard working Nuttall was replaced by Sam Nicholson, making his first appearance of the season following a knee injury.

Throughout the afternoon, Eddie Beadle’s long throw-ins had caused AFC Hull’s defence problems with their power and range, and this tactic was employed again on 65 minutes when another long throw found a head which AFC Hull keeper Craig Lindley responded to, by pulling off an outstanding save.

Lindley was again called upon to make more fine saves as Eddie Beadle turned up the pressure, suddenly creating a number of clear chances.

In the 70th minute, the AFC Hull defence was caught out when a quick break left the Eddie Beadle front man Carl Giblin one-on-one with Lindley and he squeezed the ball just wide of the on-rushing keeper and into the net.

AFC Hull pushed on seeking to equalise, but again were indebted to keeper Lindley when he pulled off another brilliant save from a long distance drive – the sort of shot which has long been Eddie Beedle’s trade mark.

In the 78th minute, Liam Lewis, who had enjoyed an excellent half, switched the play to send a great cross to Ian Tuttle but his powerful low drive flashed wide of the post. AFC Hull again pushed forward and came so close to equalising, but after a hectic goal mouth scramble, the goal bound effort was cleared off the line by an Eddie Beadle defender, and AFC Hull have to look elsewhere for their next win.

Goodwin FC are setting a hot pace in Division 1, where they remain unbeaten, but found themselves in a fairly even contest with Cross Keys Cottingham until gifted a goal just before the half time break.

Goodwin’s second goal was a peach and their third success killed Cross Keys off, though Cross Keys were not too despondent as they had created many more chances than usual, and their build ups were very good, but with the last shot off target.

Anlaby Park’s early season form seems to have deserted them but they almost got an encouraging start when visiting Paull Wanderers who, after six minutes, tried hard to gift wrap a goal after a long ball was mis-guided by defender Chris Wilson towards but over his keeper Liam Smith, but Smith narrowly prevented an own goal, just managing to back pedal and turn the ball over the bar.

Buoyed by this encouraging start, Anlaby employed a similar tactic after 20 minutes and this time the long ball created a one-on-one situation which was capitalised upon, though Paull questioned whether they lost out in a marginal offside decision.

This set back acted as a spur to Paull, and in the 33rd minute they brought the scores level when a good cross from the left from Karl Smith found James Sexton at the back post, and he hit the ball past keeper Neil Cavany into the bottom corner of the net.

In the second half, Paull came out with all guns blazing and scored after only two minute when the same duo combined, this time following a corner, and Sexton again hammered the ball into the back of the net.

Paull almost extended their lead after 55 minutes but a powerful header from Terry Thompson was cleared off the goal line.

Both sides created some good chances, but Anlaby were increasing the pressure and it was no great surprise when, with 15 minutes remaining, they got back on level terms when the left winger was allowed far too much space, and ran at keeper Smith, leaving him with no chance when he slotted the ball past him.

At 2-2, Paull looked to have run out of steam, and would have settled for a draw, but on came super sub Chris Davidson who found his way toward the Anlaby goal, but when he found he had little support, tried his luck with a shot at goal, and placed the ball into the bottom corner of the net!!

With less than six minutes remaining on the referee’s watch, Paull decided to ‘shut up shop’, holding on to ball as much as they could - and secured all 3 points!!

Grassroots Sports (BHE) and AFC Malt Shovel were involved in a hard fought game at Newington Park, and two first class saves by Shovel’s keeper John Sanderson ensured that his side remained among the front runners in Division 2. Malt Shovel’s goals winning goals were scored by Lee Kenny and Rob Lambert.
