Matches played Saturday 28th November 2009
Good-win for Bev Road Rangers as they close in on league leaders.
After generally stringing good results together, Cross Keys Cottingham produced a subdued performance against Amateur League Division 1 title challengers Bev Road Rangers and though Keys were equal to their opponents in the midfield exchanges, they appeared sadly lacking in defending set pieces.

Midway through the first half, Bev Road won a corner kick which was fired low into, and across the Keys goalmouth by Andy Lambert, and no defender made any real move to clear the ball, and Kev Hayes was able to run in and nudge the ball into the net.

Keys did manage the odd good effort on the opposition goal, but keeper Benjamin Gallagher dealt comfortably with anything fired towards him.

As halftime approached Keys conceded an innocuous looking free kick wide out and close to the half way line. A nicely floated free kick was fired in, and again, no Keys defender made any serious effort to attack the ball unlike Kev Hayes who moved forward to make the ball his and nestled a great header into the back of the net. From doing little wrong, Keys were facing an uphill battle as half time arrived.

Bev Road scored virtually straight away when the game resumed following a determined run down the right wing and long range shot from Andy Lambert which squeezed through keeper John Hawkes’ legs.

Bev Road continued to look comfy and some great passing from joint man of the match ‘Big’ Shaun Taylor saw Lee Jowett sent away to score a fourth goal.

Effective defending by the other joint man of the match Andrew Pattison, kept Cross Keys quiet until 30 seconds from the final whistle when Keys contented themselves with a late consolation goal from Rich Hook.

The win by Bev Road assumed greater importance with the news that league leaders Goodwin FC had suffered an unexpected defeat to AFC Hull Reserves.

AFC Hull are a young team who play neat football but have lacked an older head to organise them, and have looked suspect in defence, but their problems are being addressed and the likelihood is that previously unbeaten Goodwin underestimated them.

Goodwin took an early lead, but Hull Reserves rallied to gain a 2-1 half time advantage, and a remarkable second period followed as Goodwin surrendered their proud record.

Alex Boreham and Billy Tuttle both found the back of the net twice, while Luke James and Liam Lewis also added their names to the scoresheet for AFC Hull, who will now be looking to produce repeat performances and climb the league ladder.

Pinefleet Wolfreton, from almost not resuming this season in the Premier Division, have transformed their fortunes remarkably under the guidance of Glenn Holmes, as was clearly underlined against The Lair over whom they gradually assumed control.

The Lair are an excellent footballing side, and the game was evenly poised for the first 20 minutes but the first chink appeared when Pinefleet’s Graham Waudby skipped passed a defender who sent him crashing to the ground, and Gareth Monkman stepped forward to smash the resultant penalty away.

After this goal The Lair caused a few problems and could have equalised on two occasions through Joe Baxter but he placed his efforts wide, and gradually Pinefleet became more dominant, playing some of their best football of the season – delightful to watch, but this may cause selection headaches with a full complement of players becoming available.

The second half saw The Lair under the cosh as Rio Buckley drove Pinefleet forward, and the introduction of substitute Callum Harrison produced a remarkable shooting exhibition which unbelievably saw him remain goalless despite his reining in shots and consistently rattling the woodwork.

Despite the match slipping from them, The Lair never faltered in intensity and trying to get back into contention, but finally had to accept that Pinefleet were supreme on the day when Monkman rounded off a four goal lesson, rattling home a late second penalty.

After five straight defeats in league and cup games Swiss Cottage RBL needed to get back to winning ways against the unpredictable Kingburn Athletic Reserves and restore confidence within the team.

Both teams started in lively fashion, with some good football being played, and a breakthrough came for Swiss after 25 minutes when Shaun Scotthorne broke through to beat Kingburn keeper Keith Simmonds at the near post. The lead was short lived, however, as Kingburn equalised within 5 minutes with a well-taken header.

Swiss put the pressure on the Kingburn defence and were rewarded when Ben Bassett hit a sweet right footed shot which left keeper Simmonds standing and watching the ball fly into the net, giving Swiss the lead at the break.

After the interval Swiss picked up from where they left off, and were determined not to let the lead slip and, on the hour mark, Shaun Scotthorne latched on to a loose ball in the Kingburn defence to score his side’s third goal.

Swiss continued to press and with five minutes remaining put the game beyond Kingburn when Ben Bassett scored his second goal with a well-struck drive.

Kingburn did not give up and were rewarded with a consolation goal with two minutes remaining

Quaddy Rangers were hoping to recapture their early season form against AFC West Hull and the opening stages produced encouraging signs - from both sides - but Quaddy soon became dispirited after a disputed decision provided West Hull with a free kick which was floated into their penalty box, and when keeper Mark Foster missed his punch, a West Hull player was left with a gift tap-in, and this single score was the difference between the sides at the break.

Quaddy carved out a succession of chances as the game resumed, but were unable to apply the finishing touch, and in seeking an equaliser, left themselves stretched in defence, allowing West Hull to break away and add a second goal.

An attack led by Jamie Marsh who had a run on the West Hull goal produced a lifeline for Quaddy, when he was brought down in the penalty area, and Mike Newdick was able to step up and slot the ball away, sending the keeper the wrong way.

An increasingly frustrated Quaddy side, seething at stream of minor decisions being given against them, conceded a further goal as West Hull rounded off a deserved win.

AFC West Hull’s second team was in action against Paull Wanderers at the inhospitable village foreshore, but the setting seemed to suit Paull who went two goals up within 30 minutes and looked as good as they have been all season, finding space and passing the ball well.

Terry Thompson opened the scoring for Paull having been unselfishly set up by Tommy Donnelly, and a second goal quickly followed when Mark Sexton and Gary Couzens combined, and Sexton’s pin point cross to Donnelly at the back post left him with a tight angle but that proved to be no problem.

Paull had some good chances at this point to increase their lead but finishing was wayward and eventually proved costly when a counter attack from West Hull resulted in a goal being scored from long range – the ball having been going wide until it struck Paull’s new signing Matt Parker on the head and was diverted into the net.

Paull craved some of West Hull’s luck when a long shot from James Sexton was deflected, but the ball on this occasion rolled serenely into the keeper’s hands.

The second half saw West Hull coming more into the game, and moved the ball around in good little spells, but without threatening the Paull goal.

As the game entered the final 15 minutes, Paull looked to be running out of steam and this proved costly as West Hull scored twice late on - the last goal and decider coming in the very last minute.

The surprise team of the season, AFC Orchard were looking to complete their first double of the season in Division 2 against the Duke of Wellington in style, but the game proved to be quite a low key affair.

The performance of Orchard’s Jake Martins stood out like a beacon as he bossed midfield with ease, and his hard work was rewarded in the 52nd minute when he sent a 30 yard shot into the bottom corner of the Duke net which left the keeper grasping thin air.

Orchard’s Ray Edmundson scoring his first goal of the season to increase Orchard’s tally, with Graham Hoff and Chris Jopling also adding to the scoreline with two good efforts.

Another strong defensive display, especially from Mathew Burke and Martin Lamplough restricted the Duke to just a single goal in response.

Orchard’s win kept them tight on the heels of leaders Hull Corinthians whose game looked at risk until a late switch to the Grassroots Sport’s pitch provided a lifeline, and enabled Corinthians to record a narrow 3-2 win.

Orchard Park United’s game with Queens County was played in a good spirit, and was a game of contrasting halves.

Orchard were easily the better team in the first half, and yet trailed at the break having conceded a penalty, and then a goal on the stroke of halftime.

The second half was completely different as Queens County switched to route one football to good effect, and ran out winners by eight unanswered goals.
