Injuries and poor finishing hamper Paull's victory bid
With a fair amount of rain falling throughout the week, on already wet surfaces, it was with some relief that most pitches around the city were given the go-ahead last Saturday, but inevitably, when conditions underfoot are soft, it takes little time for the pitches to cut up, and the Division 1 game at Bude Road between Willerby Holiday Homes and Paull Wanderers quickly was given the description of the battle of the trenches!!

Paull Wanderers were conscious of the need to perform over the 90 minutes of a game rather than, as recently, for the first half only, and early in the game their neat football, on an already deteriorating surface, ensured that they enjoyed most of the possession and they dominated for 20 minutes, at which point top scorer Tommy Donnelly was injured in a bad tackle and had to be replaced by Dave Williams.

Williams was the first player to have a real scoring opportunity to fall to him, but his strike was nowhere near hard enough and Willerby keeper Des Marham was not tested.

The game became more evenly contested, as both sides held the ball in good passing spells, and goal chances were scarce, but after 40 minutes Paull were further handicapped when keeper Liam Smith suffered a hand injury following a rough 50/50 challenge and although he battled through until the break, he was replaced for the second period.

The second half was about 15 minutes old when the deadlock was finally broken when Willerby’s Dave Bryant played a through ball into space on Paull’s left side, which Mark White got to, and his slightly deflected shot found the back of the net.

This was something of an unexpected setback as Paull were still largely in the driving seat, as was demonstrated with the equaliser coming within a couple of minutes when a great through ball which Dave Williams ran on to was blasted into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Things should have got better for Paull when Mark Sexton put Williams through on goal, but again his shot was not struck hard enough – a measure of the conditions? – and moments later Ricky Giblin made keeper Marham dive full length to prevent the ball finding the corner of the net.

The likelihood was a Paull win, but football proved its unpredictability when, with 11 minutes remaining Willerby launched a good team move, against the run of play, and a pin-point cross from Carl Tozer found the head of Dave Bryant, who made the score 2-1 – punishing Paull for all their missed chances!

Paull tried hard to rescue the game, but two more missed chances - one from Williams, and an 88th minute ‘goal’ from Terry Thompson ruled out for offside, and these were chances which needed to be made to count as Willerby ran down the clock.

In the Premier Division Quaddy Rangers were looking to back up a good win, and further impress returning manager Nigel Taylor when the faced AFC Preston, and this time were looking to add goals in replicating an enthralling first week of the season encounter between the sides.

Both sides are capable of playing excellent football and they produced a high quality game which saw Quaddy create a few chances before Simon Start gave them the lead.

The setback, acted as a spur to Preston and when a well lobbed pass landed at the feet of their striker, he struck the ball first time leaving Quaddy keeper Mark Foster leaden footed as the ball flew past him and into the net.

Chances continued to be created by both sides, and when Preston broke through after 35 minutes, they were able to go round keeper Foster (no mean feat) and took a two-one lead into the break.

With all still to play for, Quaddy came out after the break with a point to prove and within 10 minutes the game had been turned around by two goals from Mike Nagi.

An injury to the influential Danny Thompson, saw him replaced by Jamie Marshall, but within minutes of Quaddy making this change, Preston again levelled the scores when the ball was bustled in at the back post off the thigh of their big centre back, who marauded forward.

The game continued to swing from end to end, with Quaddy looking slightly the more dangerous side, and when Mike Newdick swung the ball over, Mike Nagi finished well to complete his hat-trick, and send Preston away empty handed.

Kingston Tigers in Division 2, have been improving weekly and with new signing Mamoud Soulyman (Sully) on show, and starting as he means to go on – a first half hat-trick – the Tigers dominated against Kingstown FC as Ben Killingholme and Marcus Farley controlled play, and were supported well down the wings by Bobby Mills and Eduardo, who reigned over excellent crosses from both sides of the pitch, and at the break a 4-1 advantage had been attained.

The Tigers lost control of the game for a ten-minute spell during the second half, allowing Kingstown to score twice, and then equalise from a fortuitous penalty.

A couple of substitutions, to replace tiring legs, saw the Tigers start to regain control of the midfield again and goals from Bobby Mills and Killer (Ben Killingholme) secured the win.

A good all round team performance by AFC Malt Shovel saw them just fail to break Hull Corinthians unbeaten record.

Goals from Lee Hall and Rob Lambert saw Malt Shovel recover from a two-goal deficit to force a grandstand finish, drawing level with four minutes remaining.

However, instead of settling for a point, Shovel went looking for the winner and naively conceded a goal with the last kick of the game.

Improving sides, Orchard Park United and Duke of Wellington enjoyed a very well fought out contest with both teams playing good football, complemented by excellent refereeing throughout by Mark Hemsworth.

The Duke went into the lead following poor defensive work by Orchard, who quickly regrouped to plug the gaps, and the game the game was end to end until just before half time when Orchard lost the ball in midfield, and Duke capitalised to score on the break.

Orchard resumed after the interval in determined mood and kept up the pressure until midway through the half when neat work resulted in a goal by Rashid, the club’s youngest player at only 16 years of age.

Both sides fought hard for another goal, but both keepers and defences did their job brilliantly and though the Orchard team failed to take any reward from the game, the players are finally starting to work as a team, and the management’s hard work is reaping dividends, if not, on this occasion, points.
