Bev Road's secret weapon throws Paull into confusion.
There has been publicity recently about the world’s longest throw-in, comparisons having been made to the ability of Stoke City’s Rory DeLap, and last week the Amateur League scene became aware of the throws of Bev Road Ranger’s Darren Kenny who was unleashed on, or at least caught out, the unsuspecting Paull Wanderers.

Paull Wanderers were hoping that a couple of new signings into their ranks would provide them with more consistency, but against one of the Division 1 pacesetters, they soon had their backs to the wall when, after three minutes Bev Road’s Lee Jowett ran through from his own half and placed the ball in the top corner of the goal from 20 yards.

A long throw-in midway through the half provided Bev Road’s second success, big Shaun Taylor heading the ball into the net to complete a great set move.

A long-range strike from Paul Ulliott into the bottom corner of the net increased the lead to three goals and the procession continued when Shaun Taylor sent in a header from around the penalty spot, which hit the bar on its way into the net.

Although trailing heavily, Paull had in fact given as good as the got, but their finishing prowess had been decisive. The situation deteriorated further when Kenny sent in another long throw which keeper Liam Smith touched into his net, turning what would otherwise have been a goal kick, into a goal!!

Paull’s form improved considerably after the break as they strove to get back into the game, and were intent on cutting out Bev Road’s lethal weapon, keeping the ball in play as much as possible, and it was no surprise when Paull scored after 55 minutes when a good Karl Smith pass picked out Terry Thompson whose shot went in the bottom right of the net.

Thoughts of a comeback surfaced, and with plenty of time remaining, Paull began to create chances - hitting the post three times plus two shots cleared off the line, before disaster struck again – another long throw being touched into his own net by keeper Smith!

Paull added a second goal to their tally when James Sexton hammered home a penalty, but Bev Road still had the last word when Wayne Parsons came on, when it was felt he could be risked as a late substitute, and he took the ball around keeper Smith before smashing home Bev Road’s final score.

Bev Road’s win became even more significant with the news that nearest rivals Goodwin FC, who always look dangerous when attacking, had gone down by a 3-2 margin to West Hull United.

Quaddy Rangers were looking forward to resuming playing in the Premier Division after a month’s inactivity against Cavalier Wanderers and both teams started well, playing good football, and Quaddy took lead from a good strike by Mike Thompson.

Quaddy’s finishing did not match their approach play, seemingly unable to hit a barn door, and when Cavalier created one chance, Dan Poppleton took it.

Ian Robinson provided a moment of light relief during the game when attempting an overhead kick to score for Quaddy, but he only succeeded in hitting the ball against his own head – much to everyone else’s amusement.

Cavalier refused to be beaten and deservedly earned a point – an indication of more to come??

Pinefleet Wolfreton appeared to tighten their strangled hold on pole position, when they raced to a four goal lead before half time against AFC Hull but they did not have matters all their own way after the break as Nathan Nuttall reduced the deficit by two goals, before Pinefleet stepped up another gear to add two further goals. Nuttall, however, had the last word, completing a stunning hat-trick.

Determination to get a game on was rewarded when Cross Keys Cottingham played Pinefleet Wolfreton Reserves – the game having been switched from Keys new temporary Anlaby home to Marist Sports Club, and a cracking match played with real flair ensued.

The game was end to end with Keys’ Ollie Purcheon scoring first to set something of a pattern, as Pinefleet came back to equalise through Steve Miller.

A Rich Murphy header allowed Keys to retake the lead, but again Miller brought Pinefleet level before a penalty award allowed Murphy to again move Keys in front.

The Pinefleet Miller brothers Steve and Shawn then added further goals, Steve completing his hat-trick, and put Pinefleet in front for the first time in the game, but in the last five minutes, Adam Grimmer rescued a point for Keys when he rose like a salmon to head down a corner which went into the net between two player’s legs.

The late arrival of the referee at King George V Playing Fields did nothing to break Willerby Holiday Homes concentration for their game against Spring Bank Tigers, and Willerby were set on their way to an excellent win when a cross from James Harvey found the head of Carl Tozer who put his side in front.

The first half was poor from both teams as the referee was pressurised with appeals that made the game very stop/start.

The second half was far more entertaining due to the fact Willerby got out of first gear and bagged themselves another six goals, courtesy of second half hat-tricks from the ever present Dave Bryant, and James Harvey, who tore the Spring Bank defence apart.

Despite being pleased to be able to resume action after a long period of inactivity, Kingston Tigers were only able to muster a bare team but they controlled all the early play in their Division 2 game against Orchard Park United, particularly down both wings with Sam Pullman and Joe Kidd, who both looked fast and skilful in creating chances for Bobby Mills and Jason Stevens up front.

Having squandered several early chances, the break came for Kingston with Joe Kidd’s excellent run and finish after which the solid midfield play of Marcus Farley and Matt Barr enabled the back four control any sporadic and unsupported runs or attacks from Orchard with relative ease.

Bobby Mills finally finished a chance created as a result of Pullman’s sustained pressure on the defence which resulted in a cross every time, and moments later Mills returned the compliment by passing to the oncoming Pullman who sidestepped a defender and keeper before smashing the ball home.

The Tigers coasted through to the interval with ease, but the second half was a different matter as the Kingston players lost their discipline, believing that the game was already won.

Orchard pressed and pressed and came back into the game, first with one goal, and then two pulled back, and they had taken control.

A quick change of formation to a five-man midfield by the Tigers, saw the attacking game of Orchard halted and in the final twenty minutes of what had become a hard fought game, the Tigers resumed attacking down the flanks.

After picking up a booking, Jason Stevens closed down a ball, and as the keeper failed to clear laid it, was able to lay the ball to Bobby Mills who finished emphatically with his left foot.

Kingston kept their noses in front, but their 5-4 win finally rested on a twice taken penalty, the second successful effort coming from Jason Stevens who fired into the top left corner of the goal.

Like many clubs, AFC Orchard and Grassroots Sports for All (BHE), have, due to the weather have not played two games in a row since the end of November 2009, and it was likely that mistakes would have a big effect on the outcome of their game as both sides struggled with match fitness and the slippery surface of a very wet pitch.

The game got under way at a fast pace but the pitch was having an effect on both sets of defenders who found it impossible to turn quickly and after 18 minutes Grassroots gained a corner which Liam O’Conner swung over, and a mix up by the Orchard defenders allowed Grassroots’ Callum Savage to squeeze the ball home at the near post giving keeper Alan Hoggard, in his debut game, no chance.

This setback provided Orchard with a wake up call and they pressed for a quick reply, with keeper Hoggard making sure that only one goal would be needed to draw back level as he dealt with any Grassroot forays with fine saves and took good command of his area.

Nathan Atkinson was in fine form for Orchard and on 30 minutes, following his assist, Jamie Lamplough stuck a bouncing ball into the Grassroots net after the defenders had failed to clear.

Just before half time Atkinson again broke free and ran into the box and a clumsy challenge saw him sent sprawling and a penalty was awarded which Graeme Hoff stepped up to take and sent the keeper the wrong way, and it looked like Orchard had finally got hold of the game. From the restart, the referee immediately blew for halftime.

In the second half Orchard started to dominate possession and cause more and more trouble for Grassroots, with Atkinson still pulling all the strings, but a lack of match practice seemed to have caused the Orchard attack to have lost it bite.

With seventy minutes gone, Grassroots got the rub of the green when a long through ball took an awkward bounce and skidded past the on-rushing Orchard keeper, leaving an open goal and Carl Monkman, who had run from his own half, applied just enough on the ball to lob it into the empty net, beating defenders who were racing back in a desperate attempt to clear.

Orchard introduced late substitutes in Mathew Clayton, making his debut, and Alex Lamplough to add more speed to their attack, but chances were not taken or the strong and organised defences of both sides denied further scoring, and in the final analysis points shared was deemed acceptable.
