Matches played Tuesday 9th February 2010 Veterans give Amateur League a real scare. On another thoroughly unpleasant February evening, the second round British Legion Inter League Cup tie took place at the ERCFA’s Roy West Centre between the Amateur League Senior side, and the Hull Veterans League.
The evening was bitterly cold with alternating rain and snow showers, but while the pitch stood up well, the early stages of the game were nothing enthralling, as the two sides felt their way gingerly, the Veterans using their undoubted silky skills to counter the more energetic efforts of the Amateur League players.
The game remained tied and scoreless as the Amateur League lacked composure near goal, but the situation changed when the Veterans were awarded a highly debatable free kick on the edge of the area.
The defensive wall seemed to have done it job when the Veteran’s evergreen Mark Tennison’s free kick was charged down, but the ball rebounded straight to him, and whilst his follow up shot was mishit, it crept through the still-assembled wall, and past Quaddy Rangers’s keeper Mark Foster.
The Veterans were cock-a hoop when, approaching the interval, they won another free kick on the edge of the area – this time justified – and Chris Clinton’s shot beat the wall and sneaked in at the foot of the post, leaving keeper Foster diving in vain.
The second half started with the Amateur League looking to quickly reduce the deficit, but disaster struck when Clinton slipped the ball down the left wing, perfectly into the path of Mark Tennison, whose shot burst of pace belied his years, and he showed he has lost none of his finishing ability, firing in a sublime shot from 25 yards over the head of Foster.
The Amateur League knew that tiring legs would become a problem for the Veterans and switched to a more attacking formation – win or bust – midway through the half, and with attacks becoming more and more orchestrated by Danny Thompson (Quaddy Rangers), Ferghal O’Hara (Pinefleet Wolfreton) found himself clear in front of goal and finished comfortably.
The tiring Veterans conceded a debateable penalty, which the Amateur League were grateful for with about ten minutes remaining, and Lee Jones (Sutton Fields Rangers) stepped up to confidently fire into the net, but still a single goal deficit remained.
The Veteran were using every opportunity to run down the clock, but with two minutes remaining Nathan Nuttall (AFC Hull) used his strength to open the way to goal, and fired in an equaliser.
The game went straight to a penalty shoot out, and Danny Thompson made no mistake with the first kick, putting pressure on the Veterans to match him. Their first kick was well save down to his left by Foster, after which the Amateur League spot kickers, Jones, Shaun Drury (Pinefleet Wolfreton) and Andy Hemmings (Pinefleet Wolfreton), all converted. The final Veteran kick was also save by Foster, and the Amateur League completed their narrow escape and now face the Sunday League Seniors on Wednesday 17 February 7.30, at the same venue, for a place in the final.
