Beedle let important points slip as Kingburn come back strongly.
With leaders Pinefleet Wolfreton seemingly struggling to field anywhere near a full strength side, there appeared to be an opportunity for Eddie Beedle to claw back a little of the massive points lead Pinefleet have opened over their challengers at the top of the Amateur League Premier Division, but Beedle, who were hosting Kingburn Athletic Reserves, failed to contain the fighting spirit that Kingburn bring to all their games – steadfastly refusing to accept defeat right up to the final whistle.

A pleasant winter’s afternoon – for a change – before the biting cold returned in the later stages - saw both sides awarded a penalty in the first half, which Kingburn converted through Craig Lazenby but Carl Giblin’s effort for Beedle failed to finish in the net.

The play in the first half was evenly balanced, but Beedle looked to have the sharper cutting edge, and as half time approached the scores were levelled when Kingburn keeper Keith Simmonds struggled to get through a ruck of players when the ball was crossed, and his punched clearance only managed to reach just outside the area where it was met with a perfect, controlled volley by Carl Giblin, who atoned for his earlier miss, giving the keeper no chance.

Spurred on by their success, Beedle looked the more likely side to add to their tally in the second period, and did so when a cross to the back post from the left, was headed back and down onto the goal line by Jon Duffill and Gaz Humphries turned the ball –from his normal scoring range, into the net.

Kingburn continued to play neat football and were always well in contention, spurred on by keeper Simmonds’ endless encouragement, demanding at least a draw!

A final push on the Beedle goal with centre back Craig Lazenby joining the Kingburn attack, produced a defence splitting move which saw Lazenby slide an inch perfect pass to Scott Peck who gleefully slid home the equaliser beyond keeper Danny Hill.

The final minute or so, saw Kingburn trying to grab all the points but had they achieved any further success, it would have been extremely harsh on Beedle, who will reflect that maximum points needed to collected, but that task becomes more difficult when the pressure is on!

With the continuing inclement weather, the pitch conditions at Bude Rd was never going to make for a good game of football, but what the game between Sutton Fields Rangers and AFC Preston lacked in terms of free flowing football, was made up for in determination, team spirit and resolve.

The returned of injured players into the Preston defence proved to be a seamless transition, and in an end to end game Preston played the better football while Sutton Fields relied on the speed of their forward line, which more often than not was halted by sound defensive play.

Preston were, however, undone when a moments hesitancy was capitalised upon by Rob Brockwell who nipped in to score.

Preston did not allow their heads to go down, and pressurised Sutton Fields to the extent that a cross-cum-shot from Rich Howard took a ricochet and went in off defender and keeper deflections, and the game at the interval had returned to deadlock.

Shortly after the start of the second half Preston were stung by a disputed handball decision on the edge of their goal area, from which Lee Jones stepped up to fire home the free kick.

Preston hit back through an excellent strike by Danny Shakesby, but this in turn appeared to spur Sutton Fields on, and from a throw-in, Preston were wrong footed when a handball appeal was refuted and the resultant hurried clearance was swiftly returned, and with defenders still all-at-sea, Rangers’ midfielder Matt Trowill was able to slot the ball home.

Preston do not take adversity lying down these days, and hit back with another superbly taken goal by Danny Shakesby.

Preston’s ‘bouncebackability’, however, was undone in the last seconds of the game, when Sutton Fields were awarded with a penalty which ace penalty taker Jones converted, denying Preston the draw the felt they deserved.

Swiss Cottage viewed their game against Cavalier Wanderers as a potential banana skin, as they were mindful of the excellent point their visitors had taken off high flying Quaddy Rangers the week previous, and, as Swiss had anticipated, Cavalier started really well and took a shock lead inside the first ten minutes with a well taken goal from Dan Poppleton.

Swiss stepped up their game and had drew level when a brilliant lob over the Cavalier defence by Clint Brant found Shaun Scotthorne who was clear on goal and he made no mistake in finding the net.

Both sides created good chances but the defences came out on top until five minutes before the break when once again Shaun Scotthorne hit a low shot which gave the keeper no chance, and Swiss a 2-1 interval lead.

Cavalier started the second period as they had the first, and levelled the scores, again inside the first ten minutes, with a scrambled goal which must have hit a least five Swiss players before falling neatly for Poppleton to side foot the ball into the net.

This seemed to breath some much needed life into Swiss who started knocking the ball about and playing some good football resulting in a fine header from Jack Wheelhouse to restore their lead.

The last quarter of the game saw Swiss started to take advantage of a tiring Cavalier side and scored again with Shaun Scotthorne completing his hat trick when he beat two defenders to a through ball. With five minutes remaining, Swiss put the icing on the cake with Shaun Scotthorne’s fourth goal of the afternoon.

AFC Hull played some good football in the opening stages against Quaddy Rangers and took the lead when Nathan Nicoll sent a looping effort into the net from the edge of the area

Quaddy then applied pressure to try to redress the score, and eventually a good cross from Jamie Marshall resulted in an own goal restoring parity, after which the scores remained tied to the break.

The second half saw Quaddy – fast becoming a Jekyll and Hyde team – up their game but it was not until the later stages that a good goal from Mike Newdick gave them the lead, after which Jamie Marshall followed up with a hat-trick.

Although the game was now beyond them, AFC Hull kept battling but suffered a further setback when Mike Nagi followed up to complete the late goal rush.

Bev Road Rangers were doubtless be looking to maximise the loss suffered by close rivals Goodwin FC a week earlier, when facing table toppers Willerby Holiday Homes in Division 1, but came up against a side who also have strong championship aspirations, and are on an extended winning run.

Willerby made one change from their previous game, Andy Steels returning to partner Gary Dougal in the centre of defence, and the first half was a very even contest which saw both side coming close and saw Willerby keeper Des Marham pulling off two great saves to prevent Beverley from opening their account.

Twenty minutes into the game, saw both teams reduced to ten men when nasty challenges made Willerby’s Chris Lawler retaliate and he was shown a red card for the second time this season.

Willerby went ahead – with the only goal of the first half - when a free kick was whipped in by James Harvey, and Andy Smith to dived in fearlessly to head the ball in to the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Going into the second half Willerby had to make a change due to David Spencer pulling out of the game with a groin strain, to be replaced by Joe Murray, after which caravan firm had to soak up a lot of pressure but thanks to some great defending by Steels and Dougal, Bev Road were kept at bay.

On the hour mark, a great through ball enabled Carl Tozer to race forward and slot the ball home to double Willerby’s lead.

Willerby then capped the game off when man of the match Leon Dewson played a great ball to Tozer who again ran on to the ball and finished well - to the delight of the Willerby sideline.

Games between Cross Keys Cottingham and West Hull United are always close games – as their respective league positions would suggest – and Cross Keys were therefore delighted to take the lead within the first five minutes with an 18 yard shot from Darren Norton.

This goal was soon followed by a second score from close range by ever-present veteran Mark Delves (described as shin padded over the line!), which ended his three season goal drought.

Adam Grimmer then added a third for Keys before the break.

Half time saw the introduction of Richard Hook for Keys, providing more support for Grimmer who responded by adding to his tally.

A double substitution by West Hull United gave West’s more fire-power and they scored immediately through Izzy Uzokwe, and applied late pressure… but to no avail.

Kingston Tigers were struggling to field a full side to face high flying AFC Orchard in Division 2, but when numbers were made up, started well with a five man midfield, where Marcus Farley started to control play, keeping passes short and retaining the ball patiently, and Kingston basically stood up to a strong Orchard team who nevertheless started to dominate and caused Kingston to defend at length and rely on breakout runs.

Kingston’s Alex Webster did well to nullify the threat down the right wing of Jake Martins, and even found time occasionally to venture forward.

After being under sustained pressure, Kingston finally gifted Orchard a goal when a pass held up on the sticky surface and fell to the Orchard striker who placed it into the net well.

At the start of the second half, after a spell of midfield passing, a cross was placed onto the head of Kingston’s Sam Pullman for him to equalise – but unfortunately two quick Orchard responses soon reverted the score to a 3-1 deficit.

This resulted in a fight back by Kingston with centre back Jason Stevens marshalling his team who won free kicks and the odd corner and started to look more dangerous. Bobby Mills gave an industrious performance up front, forging a lone furrow, trying to link up play.

The break for Kingston came when, from a corner, Alex Webster timed his run and headed Kingston’s second goal. The award of a free kick, and Stevens bending the ball over the wall and into the path of Pullman’s run then brought the equalising goal.

The final sting in the game came when Orchard regained the lead during the final throes of a well-fought game, and ultimately the match points. Though disappointed to go away without any reward, Kingston were consoled by having scored three times against one of the Amateur Leagues most miserly defences.
