Amateur League deservedly earn place in 2010 British Legion Inter League Cup final.
The second semi final of the British Legion Inter League Cup was played on another miserable night at the ERCFA’s Roy West Centre, with rain falling for most of the duration of the game, but it did nothing to stop the Amateur League and Hull Sunday League Representative sides producing an exciting, and close contest.

The Amateur League were perhaps fortunate to have seen their opponents earlier in the competition as the Sunday team had eliminated the Amateur League’s Junior side, but this did highlight to Manager Glenn Holmes where the opponents main danger came from, and it was apparent that with the Sunday League’s Glenn Morfitt nullified, the team lost its cutting edge.

The game was end to end throughout the first half, and both sides, with steadier finishing could have opened the scoring, but in the event, this was only done as half time approached with a fluke goal for the Sunday League when a cross from Mike Bettney (Roplas) by-passed everyone sailed and into the top corner of the net.

The Amateur League’s response was instant, going upfield from the restart and a jinking run by Craig Copley (Eddie Beedle) ended with a perfect cross to the feet of Danny Thompson (Quaddy Rangers) who side footed the ball home.

The second half was dominated largely by the Amateur League who created several chances which were snatched at, and missed, until the dangerous Lee Jones (Sutton Fields Rangers), who was being fed delightful through balls down the right wing finally made one count with an exquisite left foot finish, after his first attempt had been parried.

Although the Sunday League looked to be running out of steam, they made a big late effort, but any dangerous breaks were dealt with by solid defence, or when called upon, by the brave goalkeeping of keeper Mark Foster (Quaddy Rangers).

A 2-1 win was well merited by the Amateur League, who have possibly benefited from being the only League to have been drawn to play in every round of the competition, and consequently have gradually gelled as a team.

The final is scheduled for Tuesday 23 February, at the Roy West Centre (7.30pm) against the Humber Premier League, in which both sides will be wearing kits which have been presented (to the finalists) by the ERCFA.
