Matches played Saturday 10th April 2010 Beedle stun Pinefleet and then keep title hopes alive, meanwhile Thompson signs off in style. A difficult low sun, a cold evening, and unkempt long grass in places was the setting at Flinton Grove for the Amateur League Premier Division fixture between Eddie Beedle and season long league leaders, Pinefleet Wolfreton.
The game appeared to be the defining fixture for Beedle, who, if they came out victors, could still pip Pinefleet for the title, and this proved to be sufficient incentive to ensure they came out with all guns blazing, and ripped the opposition defence apart in the first 15 minutes.
Whether Pinefleet were over confident or not is a mystery, but on the night they were simply not at the races, and massive defensive gaps were exploited by Beedle who took the lead inside the first five minutes when Matty Carr chased down a through ball, which Pinefleet keeper Shaun Drury lost in the sunlight, causing him to be slow to react and Carr was able to win the race and clip the ball over his body and into the net.
Having gone a goal behind, Pinefleet should have adopted a safety first approach, but when the ball was played down Beedle’s right wing, full back Gareth Monkman had time to clear, but tried to play too much neat football, and was barged off the ball which was crossed to the near post were Carr applied the final touch, squeezing the ball past frustrated keeper Drury.
Pinefleet were able to create chances, despite having been forced by injuries and availability to field a strange team formation, but were unable to convert openings, and hoped that the second period, with wind advantage, may see the game turn around.
Pinefleet were well aware of the danger Danny Boxhall’s long throw-ins caused, but still gave away a cheap throw, and from yet another exocet type delivery, Beedle’s Andy Hardy swooped for a third goal – from which the Pinefleet defenders remonstrated with each other as to whom should have prevented the score.
With the game now beyond them, Pinefleet had to concede that their opponents had, on this occasion, wanted it more, and move on to the remaining decisive games.
Fast forward to the weekend, and Eddie Beedle travelled to Pickering Park to face a tricky game against AFC West Hull.
The security of this scoreline wobbled a little when West Hull pulled a goal back as the interval approached, but still Beedle looked in control.
The second half took a different slant with West Hull pulling a goal back, and then to the dismay of Eddie Beedle rammed home an equaliser.
A late flurry by Beedle tried to recover the situation, but the refusal of a handling appeal, and near misses in a final onslaught left the score unchanged and left Beedle reflecting that perhaps their exertions against Pinefleet, had actually undone them against AFC West Hull.
Although not out of contention, the two points lost by Beedle had certainly put the ball firmly back into Pinefleet’s court.
Cavalier Wanderers have made a late, determined bid to escape from the Premier League basement, and faced fellow strugglers Kingburn Athletic Reserves on a glorious Saturday afternoon for football, letting the ball do all the work in the first 45 minutes.
Within five minutes of the start of the game, Cavalier were a goal up with a counter attacking break and a sweet cross from Dan Poppleton for Eddie Toray to tap in.
Cavalier were clearly in no mood to finish last in the division this season, and following a good fifteen minute spell of pressure, finished off with a sublime top corner free kick from Dan Morris.
With five minutes of the half remaining Toray broke free and appeared to be hacked down, one on one with the keeper, but the referee waved play on.
Cavalier had to withstand some early pressure at the start of the second period, but there were no real clear-cut chances carved out by Kingburn, who sought to unsettle the Cavalier defenders with long balls forward which the Cavalier rearguard dealt with admirably.
Kingburn finally achieved a break through, when Cavalier failed fully clear the danger, and Kingburn pumped a hopeful ball into the box and Lee Mason somehow managed to set up team mate Neil Williamson to score.
Cavalier refused to let this setback derail them and deservedly carved Kingburn open again and Turay scored his second, and Cavalier’s third goal.
In the last few minutes the lead could have been extended further but a mix up between Toray and Richardson led to an offside decision when really it should have been a fourth goal.
Quaddy Rangers have been desperate to return to winning form and took the chance to do so against a short-handed SC Electrical side, playing some good football knowing they were unlikely to be under any real pressure.
Dave Bettney opened the scoring for Quaddy, and their advantage was increased by two goals from Mike Newdick, the first from the penalty spot.
Youngster Johnny Laverack added his name to the scoresheet with the best goal of the game, and the scoring was completed by substitute Lance Palmer, with a lovely shot into the top corner of the net – and he then promptly received a booking for his over the top celebrations.
Bev Road Rangers kept up their relentless quest for the Division 1 title, with a midweek win over Goodwin FC, and they drew with Pinefleet Wolfreton Reserves in a cracking game that saw Pinefleet take the lead through Dave Watts, but Liam Caulfield equalised for Bev Road. The action continued until the last minute when Pinefleet felt they should have been awarded a penalty, but their claims were waved away.
Spring Bank Tigers, on their emergency home pitch for the day at Newington Park, fought out a very tight first period with Cross Keys Cottingham but during this time, Keys stand-in keeper Steve Ellam, nor the Tigers’ keeper Ramin Hassan were tested.
The second period saw the Tigers score first, and increase their lead ten minutes later. Keys pulled a goal back, only to see the Tigers regain a two-goal advantage before Keys scored another to make a jittery last 5 minutes.

AFC Orchard are still pushing hard for promotion out of Division 2, and consider every game to be a must win game to keep them on track and opponents Okapi were clearly facing a hard tussle.
After seven minutes Chris Jopling set Hoff up for his second following some crisp movements which left the Okapi players chasing shadows, and the pattern remained throughout the half with Orchard looking to carve out more chances to extend their lead even further.
Graeme Hoff was given the chance on 27 minutes to complete his hat-trick and he again calmly to beat the keeper.
Just when it appeared everything Hoff did in front of goal was going in, he smashed a shot against the bar with the Okapi keeper rooted to the spot, after a good square ball from Jopling - the last significant action of a half that was totally dominated by Orchard.
Orchard manager Terry Clayton warned his charges that the half time lead may still not be sufficient to ensure a win against an Okapi side who do not give up, and out of the blue, Okapi got the run of a ball in midfield and pushed hard to make it count and scored their opening goal of the game.
This success gave Okapi more belief that they might just get something out of the contest and sensing Orchard had taken their foot off the pedal, Okapi recorded their second success.
The fact that the game was back in the melting pot, prompted the return of more urgency within the Orchard side, and they applied pressure to the Okapi defence and when young Dave Harrison found Chris Jopling with a neat bit of play, he struck his shot coolly into the bottom corner to restore clearer margin between the sides.
However, ten minutes later, Okapi latched onto a rare mistake by the Orchard defence to score a third goal prompting Orchard to shut up the game, and restrict Okapi to shots from distance.
Orchard finally achieved their objective, and also learned a valuable lesson that a game is competed over 90 minutes, however well things seem to be going!!
Two other sides hoping to finish in the promotion places – Hull Corinthians and AFC Malt Shovel, clashed at Bude Road, and Malt started cautiously and were under pressure when Rob Lambert scored for them what proved to be the only goal of the game, and against the run of play after 25 minutes.
Corinthians pushed for the equaliser but could not break through a Malt defence well marshalled by Paul Giblin.
The title race itself remained open for longer, when league leaders Queens County came unstuck against Kingburn Athletic 3rds, by 3-1. It seems that, since Kingburn won through to the final of the League Junior Cup, they can do no wrong!!
Grassroots Sports (BHE) defender Jody O’Connor continued to find his newly found position in attack to his liking, adding two more goals in his sides win over against Kingstown AFC, and increasing his tally to 10 goals in four games.
Grassroots other goal was scored by Callum Savage, making his season tally six, but he was unfortunately injured during the game.
Division 1 side Paull Wanderers became the first team to complete their fixtures in the 2009-10 season, and their final game also marked the end of the illustrious career of ace marksman Terry Thompson.
Although not quite so prolific this season, Thompson signed off with a hat-trick in the rout of AFC West Hull B, and ensured that, yet again, he finished as the club’s top goal scorer.
The game did not start well for Paull, and for the first ten minutes, West Hull were the better team, but a Tommy Donnelly goal, who finished off a great Chris Davidson cross, turned the game in an instant.
Straight from the restart, James Sexton put in Thompson with a stunning pass, and this (importantly on the day) got Thompson off the mark. With only 20 minutes played, and Paull two up, the side were in dream land and would have settled for that result there and then, but the game just got better and better for Paull, as everything they hit at goal was going in.
Obviously, there is a downside when a team runs away with a game, and as the goal tally mounted, a West Hull player walked from the pitch, showing himself up, and letting his team-mates down.
Paull could only play what was in front of them, and were pleased to record a convincing win, providing a fitting finale to the career in open age football of loyal servant, Terry Thompson.
